X79 6 Core High End Editing & Graphics Mac-hine / Gaming PC Build

Thread Starter
Hey guys!

So the time has come for me to upgrade from my 27" iMac to a computer thats a bit more beefy. The iMac has gotten me by over the last 2 years, had a 2.97GHz i7 with 4GB of Ram and a 2TB hard drive, but as I'm finishing uni now and doing more and more production work I'm needing something with a bit more kick.

Now I know that being on a PC / general computing website, Mac will probably not appeal to all. But the television and production industry is ruled by Mac's so I've converted to the dark aide. I used to be a die hard PC fan before I went to uni, was in to PC gaming alot and built a few PC's but swapped to the dark side once I started. Don't think I'll ever use a PC again for everyday use though, I've loved using OSX and it works great for everything I need to do (minus gaming) so I don't see myself swapping back full time! Bring on the haters

This mac-hine (damn I keep writing it that way) will be a dual boot system with my main OS and a second Windows boot. I can't remember what... Uhh... "Linux"... Version I am using for the main OS, but next to Windows its like comparing Apples to Oranges...

So I ordered half of my parts last week which have arrived now and I'll be ordering the rest mid way through next week. Here's the specs for my build!

Intel 3930K - 6 core, 12mb Cache 3.2GHz / 3.8GHz boost (this will be overclocked to ~4.5GHz)
Asus X79 Sabertooth Motherboard
32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM (4 x 8GB Sticks)
nVidia GTX 670 GPU (wither Palit or Gigabyte, depends on how much I feel on spending when I order!)
2 x Samsung 830 128GB SSD's in RAID 0
2 x 2TB WD Caviar Black HDD's in RAID 0
Corsair HX650 Power Supply
Corsair 600T White Edition Case
2 x Acer 24" Monitors
Corsair H100 Water cooler for CPU
2 x Cougar Vortex Fans for H100 cooler (great CFM / Noise ratio)
Logitec C270 Webcam
Silverstone Card Reader (No More USB Card Reader or CF Cards WOHOO!)

So yeh thats my specs, I've already got the Case, CPU, Motherboard and Monitors at home, and will be ordering the rest within the next week! Keen as to get it up and running. I'll throw up some pictures soon. I'm in Sydney at the moment doing some work for a production company so won't be able to get them up until early next week!

Let us know what you think of the setup, or any recommendations before I order the rest of the parts!

Cheers

Blake

Not bad. Nice choices from a quick speed read. What are you gonna be using it for? Multimedia applications?

Yeah mostly video post production. Have netted a job with production company starting at the end of the year but also as a frelancer produce content for other projects too.

Most of my editing will be done in Avid Media Composer but I also do a fair bit of work in Adobe After Effects. Was originally planning to use an ATI card but decided to got for nVidia to use CUDA in Adobe applications.

Apart from those two, I also use Pro Tools, Boujou, Davinci Resolve and a couple of others occasionally

That's what I was wondering too... since we're talking high end production and editing.

Haha dont worry they will come in due time. These monitors will be used to get me by for the time, they were cheap as chips, plus read a heap of good reviews on them so went for them.

I'll be upgrading in the future to 2 x 27" monitors, but want them at 2560 x 1440, which my budget doest really allow for at the moment. For the time though, I have access to JVC production monitors to do colour balancing and correcting so I'll use that for finishing off. But yeh until I can afford good res 27" monitors these should suffice!

As I said in my last post, all of my parts have been ordered, so here's a final list of parts I have ordered:

Corsair Graphite 600T Special Edition White Case
Intel Core i7 3930K
Corsair Hydro Series H100 CPU Cooler
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 Overclocked 2GB
ASUS Sabertooth X79 Motherboard
2 x Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 (32GB Total)
2 x Samsung 830 Series 128GB SSD in RAID 0 (256GB Total)
2 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB in RAID 0 (4TB Total)
Corsair HX-650 Power Supply
Silverstone FP37 Black USB 3.0 Card Reader
2 x Cougar Vortex PWM Hydro-Dynamic-Bearing 120mm Black (For water cooling radiator)
BitFenix Internal USB3.0 Adapter

Searched around and found some 23" LG IPS Panels for only a little extra so sent the 24's back to PCCasegear

Here is what's arrived so far!

Nice tough motherboard, I've seen successful builds with this so I know that everything should work as it should.

6 Core 3.2GHz with Hyper Threading. Big CPU! Doesn't come with a cooler in the box but it will be cooled by the H100. I plan on over clocking it to 4.5GHz but t depends on temps for everyday use and fan noise. The Cougar Vortex fans blow 70 CFM at 18db so it should be ok!

Installed the CPU to the mobo

The 600T which it all goes in! Love how this case looks, although it's fatter than I thought. Love the window and the cable management. Pretty much everything on the case is tool less.

Installed the mobo in to the case. Love the black insides of the case

If you don't know the 600T, the top panel pops off here and you can fit 2 x 120mm fans and clip the panel back over

And up here on the bottom is where I'll mount the radiator

So I'll update some more later in the week when the rest of my parts get here!
