Cloning a HDD to a SSD question....

Thread Starter
I'm new to SSDs and I just got an Agility 3 90GB new from a fellow OCN $60 w/o having to deal with rebates/taxes and thought it was a great deal. I plan to use this SSD in a server I'm slowing putting together and almost done. However, I already have a HDD with Windows 2008 R2 and I've installed all the stuff I wanted/needed and spent quite a few hours doing it.

I would love to save time by just cloning the hard drive at my job using ghost. However, I remember reading a long time ago that it's a bad idea doing that and it's just better to do a fresh install. Is that true and with the newer SSDs or at least the one I have would that still apply?

I still need to read that SSD guide I saw here somewhere, too.

Well you have to set up the SSD but you dont relly have to set up a HDD. Personally i would just reinstall windows in SSD.

If it's been installed onto that drive using the same hardware so you don't have any driver conflicts, then I think it's perfectly fine to do this. Personally I would do a clean install though. Especially if you plan to use Sean's guide.

My only concern would be the alignment of the solid state drive.  I mean, if I remember correctly, I think this would made the solid state drive have the same alignment that the hard drive which usually is not the optimal alignment of either 1024 K or 4096 K.

So in other words it would be a bit slower? And from what I recall reading a while ago it's a bad idea to Defragment SDDs right?>

It looks that I might have to install Server 2008 R2 again after all. I just wanted to save installation time and all the tweaking I had to do to make it look/feel like Windows 7.

One more question... If I reinstall would my current Raid be intact? I used RAID 5 which is not even working like it should since it looks like there is one hard drive with bad sectors and redundancy test fails and they don't get synchronized properly. Sucks that my trail of HDD life pro ran out before I could figure out which one was it.

I think so, but it's funny because I'm not 100% sure!  I mean, I'm just going by what I've seen the experts here on OCN say, and what they say is that it helps (or maybe "allows"?  not sure) the solid state drive to run at its fullest potential provided that everything else is in order.  What I mean by saying, "having everything else in order" is having it connected to the best SATA port (that is, avoiding the motherboard's own proprietary SATA port) and having AHCI mode enabled.  On Intel systems, I would also add having Intel's Rapid Storage Technology driver installed as well.

Yep, that's right because the SSD's built-in controller (not to be confused with the SATA port controller) will still organize the fragments in the way that it is programmed to.  In other words, it would be a waste of write cycles.  Not only that, but defragging can only benefit hard drives due to the circular shape of the physical disk whereas solid state drives have a design where fragmentation is essentially the optimal organization.  So the SSD's built-in controller is programmed to keep the fragments optimally organized in a special/different way, and that means that anything a the defragger tells the SSD to do really won't be done.  The SSD will, in a sense, be lying to the OS.

Now, if hard drives had an onboard controller that would keep everything defragged, then we wouldn't need software for hard drives either.  So, for this aspect alone, SSDs are a really cool advancement!

Yeah, I know how you feel.  Were there a bunch of registry changes that you made?  How did you do it?  There might be ways to make this go quicker by having 'backups' in a sense.

Of course, you can also take screenshots.  hehe :)

Oh, that's out of my league.  I don't know much about RAID.

From what I remember it might ave been a few registry changes, but not a lot. It was mostly turning on services that Windows Server 2008 R2 has turned off by default, but Windows 7 has them on. It might be even faster than the first time since I've done it once I hope lol...

You only have alignment issues with Windows XP really.

Shouldn't be if the partition is aligned right, which it should be when you ghost it.

Hardware RAID or software via Windows? It should be intact either way.

Thanks I will try cloning I guess it doesnt hurt to even try first. And thanks for the link for cloning I might be able to do it over the weekend and not wait until Monday to do it at work.
