Building an AA battery to USB phone charger?

Thread Starter
So I am going on a week long camping trip in about 36 hours and I forgot how I was going to keep my phone battery alive while I was up there biggrin.gif. I know there are things I could order to make an AA battery to USB charger, but I am leaving in 36 hours and they won't be able to ship it in time.

My question is, is there a way that I can build a charger that will charge my phone from batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, etc) all from parts bought at the store like radio shack?

Thanks!

You can do it, in a couple of ways:

  1. You might be able to find an "emergency AA phone charger" which you can probably find at radio shack or a grocery store / pharmacy
  2. If you have a spare USB cable (cheap) you can strip it down and isolate the positive and negative power leads and attach it to a battery pack from radio shack to charge it slowly, the problem is that most of those battery packs are in parallel configuration which would only provide 1.5V, whereas if you're feeling adventurous you could just string up some batteries yourself / modify or make your own battery pack *you may be able to find one already like this, just ask the sales associate* and hook up the batteries in serial to provide 4.5V to provide a much faster charge.

If you can also just take apart the emergency AA phone charger and hook it up to a battery pack to increase it's capacity.
