can you use PCI slots between SLI?

So there's a long story behind my question but it boils down to this.

I have 3 graphics cards in PCI-E slot 2-4-6 skipping over the 3rd and 5th slot entirely.
So I'm wondering if there is a way to use the 3rd and 5th slot for different cards (in this case a sound card and capture card).
Last time I tried it would break my SLI which isn't good

I did it with a xonar sound card and never had any issues. It got might warm resting in between those two 480's, but you're water cooled

That's weird =/
I tried it before and either my sound card didn't work or the sli could no longer detect the 2nd or 3rd card =/

This is true. I was using 1366 which didn't have the same limitations that 1155 has.

Did this work for you? I have a similar MB, Asus Rampage Extreme III (assuming it's the MB in your sig). I am wanting to put a sound card (for support of DDL) in the x4 slot between the 2nd and 3rd x16 slots. The manual says almost nothing about the slots and what it does say is actually incorrect.
