Decent overclock?

Thread Starter
I just received my 2600k today from the egg as either my 2500k killed my mobo or vice versa, began to push it I ended up around 1.39v for 4.8ghz. Would you guys consider this good, average or bad? I presume 2500/2600's clock about the same as for whats good/bad but maybe theres a decent difference between the two and clock speeds.

These CPUs are really just about identical except for the 100 MHz difference and HyperThreading, so this is a very good overclock!

It's around the average of what you would expect from a 2600K. They seem to hit about 4.6 - 4.8 with that sort of voltage.

The differences are that the 2600K has HT and a bit more cache then the 2500K. They run at the same core performance though.

I figured the HT would make it decently more difficult to clock (IE higher voltage). I plan to push this chip pretty hard, but going for something high but not over the top as I don't want to fry anything after not having my rig running for almost a month.

You can get away with using less voltage if you disable HT and save on heat, but you paid for it so no sense in disabling it.

The thing about SB is they have a max frequency they will hit and nothing will change that. Throwing more voltage at it and disabling HT won't get you an extra 100mhz if the chip has hit it's frequency wall.

Disabling has provided some 2600K owners with a little boost in gaming performance.

It doesn't have to be monitored.  However, regarding the length of time, I do recommend a 14-hour Blend test if you have Prime95 27.7 because it takes 14 hours for Prime95 27.7 to get through all 84 of its FFTs.  You can also do a 14-hour Custom Blend test and set it to use about 95% of your memory.

If you feel that you don't have time for a 14-hour test, then start it on a night when you have to be somewhere in the morning the next day (like work or school).  So let's say you start the test at 11pm and go right to bed.  By 1pm in the afternoon the next day, 14 hours will have passed.  :)
