Yes..Old STT or Dominator Hypers are better..Be prepared to pay a premium, though.
psst..I just saw some old Dominators in the marketplace..ph34r-smiley.gif

No, but you really need an ivy bridge to max out trident X, my 3930k has an IMC that just won't do 2400Mhz, where the same memory does 2800Mhz with ivy. It really depends on the IMC of the cpu, although every 3930k should do at least 2133mhz.

Samsung is better price/performance, it won't outperform tridentX, but can get fairly close which is impressive at the price.

Haven't actually tried hypers with x79, & although they work on ivy, they don't work well. I was disappoint.

I have the 32GB (4x8GB) 2400Mhz set of TridentX, i haven't had the time to try and tweak them to work on X79 @ 2400Mhz. I have them running nicely @2133 for now without issues. I can bench everything @ 2400 though, but i get lock ups during idle web browsing @ 2400 randomly when it feels like it. If i have to run them @2133 it's no biggy given you won't notice anything above 1866 even in benchmarks. It's the 32GB i find more important than it's outright speed.

Personally if i was to buy any memory for X79 again, probably would be wise to stick with 2133Mhz unless you have the chance to test the CPU's IMC out in advance (not likely).

I think the tridents have the oc record right now for both clock speed and memory bandwidth on Z77s, can't remember the exact numbers but it was well over 3100, it was done at computex last month on asus and evga boards

Edit: also I have a set running on my 3930k right now with the XMP profile @2400 without any problems. I have May 2012 build date sticks if that helps. It says the build date on the sticker on the side of the heatsink in the hologram.

I'm not sure which was used, but it was the 8th sticks which should be harder to push than the 4gb ones. And the actual record was 3320mhz
http://rog.asus.com/121892012/maximus-v-motherboards/asus-rog-maximus-v-formula-the-equation-for-world-record-domination/

I think the 2400 and 2800 sticks use the same chips with different binning and looser timings anyways

i don't think it's common for the samsung sticks to hit 2800, but many do between 2400-2600 on ivy. The Trident X come in a few different models and can vary in ICs used. The 2400mhz sticks have been single and dual sided, hynix and samsung. I have 2600mhz Trident X, which use samsung ICs and are capable of over 3000mhz. It just comes down to the IMC of the cpu and which sticks you have.

From a price/performance stand point and considering that they are going to be used on an x79 rig, the samsung are a great choice. For a daily clocker, I'd be reluctant to drop $200 on a high clocking kit of ram.
