Mouse intermittently dying.

Thread Starter
I got a Logitech mouse+keyboard combo when I first built my desktop, but later switched out the mouse (Logitech G1) for a Razer Abyssus. I recently had a few software problems which culminated in a re-install of Windows, but after that, the Razer started to bug out a lot. Installing Razer drivers seemed to alleviate the issues somewhat, but would still die a lot more often that I would like. After I did some more maintenance (switching out dying hard drives, updating BIOS), I switched back to the Logitech mouse, and the rate of the mouse crapping out dropped a lot, but it's still occurring. In addition, every once in a while the keyboard as well will crap out as well. Mouse is USB, but the keyboard is PS/2. Any ideas what could happen/where I can find some more info about what's causing this?

If you did a reinstall of windows and 2 mice and a keyboard are still crapping out I'd say the culprit is the motherboard. I've seen stranger things happen though. For example one day my display went out, even the BIOS display and found out a stick of ram went bad. Replaced the RAM and the display came back.

If it was the motherboard, I wouldn't be surprised. Could it be a faulty USB port? Although it wouldn't make sense if it isn't consistent, because this sort of thing just randomly pops out of nowhere. I did have a RAM problem before, but I removed the faulty RAM and that decreased the occurrence of such problems, but they're still there. Could it be a driver problem? I'm still inclined to believe there's a software problem at the root of this.

Have you tried any different USB ports? Maybe uninstall the mouse and/or keyboard drivers/software, use them vanilla for a while and see what happens. Could be another faulty ram stick also.

I don't know how effective trying other USB ports would be, since I have no idea when this sort of thing happens, although I might as well. I'll uninstall the Razer drivers and see how it works.

Check your Mobo BIOS settings, specially USB Legacy Support and USB speed (and even check compatibility modes if you may).

You probably also missed to install mobo drivers, which while it shouldn't pose a problem with most modern OS's, it can sometimes give a problem.

Last, but not least, consider it could be a cable problem.
