The camera is focusing on it. You should be able to do that with a piece of glass and what's behind it. I've done it in a car. Note that just because it's transparent to light, it doesn't mean we can't see it. For example, I believe acrylic is transparent to light, but we can still see it.

Yes, price will be an important factor in adoption, it always is. But I would not expect them the price of regular glass. As long as they are in the neighbourhood of normal Solar Panels I can see them doing well.

The only real issue with this in normal windows is that they usually don't get direct light all day...these would make for a kick butt sky light though.

However, it is a shoe in for office windows that are often tinted a bit any way. I am sure right now it would be cheaper to make the windows of gold though frown.gif

Like how much voltage and current per square foot do they produce? Unless it is at least somewhat significant, it might just be a novelty if it isn't as cheap as regular glass.

According to this there is 527w per square meter of infrared sunlight at best. If this device is capable of converting 4% of the energy like it claims then that's ~21w for a 1sq meter window.

I am just about to get solar panels installed at my house and this just comes out doh.gif

Solar power will never come into mainstream use, no way the government or electric companies would allow it.

Same goes for gas cars, everyone and their brother is using electrolysis to partly hydrogen power their cars on youtube for next to nothing.

But yet we dont see it pushed into the mainstream markets.

They want you on the grid, and they want your $3.50 a gallon

Scientists create highly transparent solar cells for windows that generate electricity

(Phys.org) -- UCLA researchers have developed a new transparent solar cell that is an advance toward giving windows in homes and other buildings the ability to generate electricity while still allowing people to see outside. Their study appears in the journal ACS Nano.
Quote:
The UCLA team describes a new kind of polymer solar cell (PSC) that produces energy by absorbing mainly infrared light, not visible light, making the cells nearly 70% transparent to the human eye. They made the device from a photoactive plastic that converts infrared light into an electrical current.

Read more at: http://phys.org/news/2012-07-scientists-highly-transparent-solar-cells.html#jCp

So it blocks IR and lets in viable? That means it would help keep the inside cool too! Wow. Do want.
Then make this into corning glass computer that powers itself AND makes me a cup of tea in the morning. Life is good.

Strange, I didn't think infrared travelled through glass to begin with.
