lens <70mm wanted - Page 2

The 35mm would be a good standard lens and will operate more at 56mm, generally for landscapes you would want to go a bit wider. The 18-55 Kit lens is cheap and it does the job.

I'd say a 24mm prime would be a better option for a crop, but for the money those can get quite pricey... get the 18-55 kit.

Oh wait I didn't see if there was a budget.
The Tokina sounded interesting until they said it can't use filters, sad thing that.
Actually I haven't really set a fixed budget. Maybe I could justify to buy something in the 500-600€ range if it lasted me a while but I'd rather shy away from the >1000€ stuff.

The advice to first get a kit zoom and see at what range I'll end up later sounds good. Filters like polarizers could be a problem though. They don't make much sense on the very wide end but still could be of use a little zoomed in or so.
As far as I've understood, the kit lens focuses externally so I'd have to adjust the filter after focusing (or roughly predict how much to turn it). Is that doable or a recipe for utter failure?

Well spending more money on glass will generally be a good investment... but it may not be worth your money if you are just starting out and it would be better to start out small then go big.

Yeah the kit lenses do focus externally which means using screw on filters can be an issue if you are using polarizing ones, on the other hand you did express interest in doing landscape photography which generally means tripod... so you could always go old school and get a filter card. Basically just a plastic card that you hold in front of your lens to work as a filter.

Here is a video from digitalrev about landscape photography, near sunrise he uses one of the filters I am talking about.

Actually after comparing some shots from the 18-55 vs the 16-85 last night, I went for the latter after all. The 16-85 will most likely be my walk around lens for general use now, so I figured getting something solid might be a good idea. The 70-300 is way more at home for sports and stuff like that so the small overlap should be okay. It's not exactly starting small but I guess the better glass will be worth it in the end. Oh and I did order a circ. polarizer too so I'm excited how that will work out when the mailman arrives tomorrow. wheee.gif
This little guide will come in handy then -> How to test a lens

The DigitalRev video is awesome as always. Hats off to Kai for climbing those rocks with that much gear in his hands while just wearing some sneakers. Good advice in there too! I wouldn't have thought that just holding a filter card would work and not turn everything into some blurry mess.
Do mountains of trash count as landscape? I've got some from cleaning the house currently, could as well use them for target practice... rolleyes.gif

Thanks for helping me make a decision. The process maybe didn't make too much sense but sometimes I'm a little weird. +rep be with ye smile.gif

Enjoy the lens. Just keep in mind to not get caught up always testing it instead of just going out and shooting

Nah, I just find this guide handy to make sure its a good copy when it arrives. Had to exchange 2 70-300's initially because the first one had something floating behind the back element in a sealed up area and another one was really really uneven and way softer that it should've been. Consider me a burnt kid or something.
I'm anxious to get out there and shoot something lots biggrin.gif

Might be a bit late now but when buying an expensive filter it's always a good idea to get a 77mm and use step up rings. This way you only buy the filter once.

You can use a cpl on a wide, sky gets a bit uneven but you might find that the look you like.
