Overclocking G.Skill RipjawsX 8GB 1600Mhz?

Thread Starter
These exact sticks: http://gskill.com/products.php?index=355

The question is not is it worth it, but what would their max safe voltage be? Default / spec is 1.5v and I can't even get to POST with 1.6v @ 1866Mhz, default timings.

And with regard to the timings.. will increasing them maybe help with that? will that be better than stock or just lower the performance?

Any advice/help greatly appreciated.

Edit: Best info I could find on overclocking these was in this thread/post http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18809668&postcount=5

Edit 2: Guy is on the money with the CAS settings. CAS 10 @ 1866mhz = post but freeze at windows logo, CAS 11 @ 1866 able to boot into windows. Is lowering the cas from 9 to 11 worth going from 1600mhz to 1866mhz? I just have no idea on this part.

do some googling there is a memory calculator some place that will tell you if it is worth # cas vs #mhz

I couldn't find this calculator but did find some charts that I couldn't read.

Where I am up to now ( CAS 11 @ 1866Mhz ):

Prime95 is giving fatal errors after 1 or 2 passes on blend with the RAM under those settings, remove changes and no errors.
What can I do to my ram to eliminate those errors? I tried upping the voltage to the RAM from 1.5 to 1.55 ant 1.6v, no change. Voltage doesn't appear to affect these sticks at all unless you undervolt then I get Windows freezing.

Will changing any other variables help? In short, what else can I try that will help stop the errors but still give me the small performance boost of 1866Mhz over 1600Mhz?

(Windows Experience Index gives me an extra .1 point to my RAM at 1866Mhz from 7.8 to 7.9, but that probably means nothing really and I don't want to install some full on benchmarking software just for this small thing.)

Edit: Timings at 11/11/10/29 like the guy in that post linked, 1866Mhz and still giving fatal errors in P95, I wonder if I could ignore them and just try playing a game for a bit and see what happens. I'll report back tommorow after gaming for a bit and seeing if I get any crashes or weird happenings.

There is a calculator some place I remember seeing some one talk about it.

Wei score is worthless ignore it.

Use memtest86+ 5.00b1 to test memory not prime it is not as good at it. It is beta but will work only less important features are bugged. You will find it in there forum. Run 3 passes with it until it passes then run it overnight to be sure.

I figured out VCCIO being another voltage control under the RAM voltage, but I tried upping to 2133Mhz using 11/11/11/28 1.6v and wouldn't even POST, but I didn't try the VCCIO voltage change. Guess i'll try that now. Also I did make a memtest usb stick earlier to test but it wasn't the beta so I just grabbed the beta and made a new one, i'll do it sometime soon/tommorow as it's getting late.

Edit: Still won't POST with the VCCIO voltage change and loosening the timings as much as possible so I guess 1866Mhz is the cap on my sticks with 11/9/9/24. Is it worth trying to lower the other timings like the 9's down to 8's and 24 down to something? I really should look up what they mean when overclocking and how it works but if anyone can give me a TL;DR that would be appreciated.

Another question though: Will picking up another 8GB (2x4GB) sticks of these give me any performance boost at all as I could get them for just £40 ($62), would it be worth it at all or just upgrading the RAM to something else entirely?

I've seen this but it's not very helpful at all. I mean, look at this chart:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/bizket/OC1.jpg

Where are the RipjawsX on it? Am I completely blind or are they just not there, but then he talks about the results...does the fact that it's not there mean it isn't POSTing at all or what? He doesn't specify. As I said not very helpful for a newbie overclocker like myself.

Edit: Okay, played with memtest for a few minutes with each setting and got a lot of errors. Here are my findings:
Higher voltage doesn't seem to help with the overclock at all, but does reduce the amount of errors in memtest.

Most stable I can get it in memtest is 11-9-9-24 @ 1866Mhz 1.6v, giving 1 or 2 errors during test #6 (that's about as far as I went each time, all other times were more errors on test 6, or a LOT more)

Can anyone make any sense of my results, what can I do to try and increase stability? I tried 1.65v but it seemed like memtest actually crashed after test #3 or so. How safe is it to run this ram at 1.6v all the time as opposed to stock 1.5v?

paradoxum,
I'm not sure which version of the P8P67 PRO you have; but if it's 3.1 go into the EFI BIOS --> select the Advanced Mode [upper right hand corner...next to the exit]--> then select AI Tweaker-->go to AI Overclock Tuner where it says "Auto"-->click that and select XMP-->Save and Exit. You should be good to go. No need to mess around with voltage or input latency numbers. Once you have the BIOS straight, you should be able to boot. Now if you want to overclock...I suggest you get your system stable first, then use the software [AI Suite] to overclock your memory. Good luck, and I hope this helped.

I have the newer version of the board and I am already using manual overclock to get my CPU to 4.7Ghz @ 1.3v following advice from the motherboards club thread and such, also according to memtest i'm already using XMP although I still don't see any actual options for it in the BIOS windows itself. Proably because you say it's an "Auto" option when i'm doing it manually, but I suppose manually enables it anyway.

My CPU OC is rock solid stable and it's just the RAM I'm worrying about now.
If anyone could look at my previous post and answer some questions I have there that would be really appreciated as they still apply.

Thanks guys.
