AMD AA and AF Application in-Game vs. CCC

During various games I've tried combinations of changing the in-game AA and AF and those same settings within CCC. I've tried both with and without overwriting the in-game settings through CCC. I've modified the profiles for the games (and Steam if it's a game through Steam), but most of the time I cannot tell a difference in the image quality. The only recent game where I noticed jagged edges disappearing with enhancing the AA setting is Dead Space 2 (played through Steam, and it only helped when Edge Detect was enabled). For Alan Wake and L.A. Noire, for example, I see no change regardless of what combination of in-game and CCC settings I use. Is there some rhyme or reason to this?

The reason why you cannot force-override AA through CCC on many titles is because they use what's called a deferred rendering engine.

Let me excerpt a blog I wrote to give more info:

Deferred engines are very common on PC, because most of these games are also being released for consoles, which are generally not powerful enough to support anti-aliasing. Deferred engines are also very efficient for consoles to use.

But it's not just console games. Diablo III is a great example, as it's a deferred DX9 engine, and we had to write special code into the drivers to get anti-aliasing working through Catalyst.

9/10 times, it's best just to use the in-game AA options available to you, or use MLAA, which will work on any title, even those that don't support anti-aliasing.

So I click the morphological AA toggle in CCC and keep the "Use Application Settings" on? I'm pretty sure I tried that as well. I also did not see any difference with in game AA and AF changes, by the way. That can't be normal.

I guess I'm more worried about the lack of perceivable improvements with increase in AA and AF. Enabling MLAA doesn't seem to make a difference whether allowing application control is enabled or not.

I've started to play PC games again (haven't since last post really), and it still makes no difference in image quality regardless of whether AA is enabled via CCC or in game. I also can't see a difference when MSAA is enabled - which is what the AMD rep. said would work regardless - so I'm thinking something is not working correctly either because of Steam or CCC. I am selecting to overwrite application Settings when trying to enable CCC AA, so that's not the issue. I have also updated CCC so that's not the issue.

I find it exceptionally hard to believe that no one has experience with this. Considering how many AMD users and Valve fanboys there are, surely someone has figured out which settings work and which do not.

I think AMD dude's trying to tell you that it will work if the game has the capability, and it will not if it does not. So if you're not seeing any difference, don't worry, be happy. biggrin.gif

I have a 7970 on the way (and may get a second), so I will have the power to pump up the graphics and AA, so anyone with insight as to how I can actually make a noticeable difference with AA would be appreciated. What I've gathered is to use internal application settings, but that MLAA will work with all games if forced by CCC. I guess my remaining issue is that I cannot seem to see any difference with MLAA enabled versus not, which implies it is not working.
