Quick question on cooling Pentium D

post #1 of 8

Hey guys, I've recently been biten by the custom pc bug again, and i've seen some truly awesome rigs on this site, so I was wanting to pick your brains a little on cooling a older Pentium D build I just did for practice. (Been awhile since I built a computer, last one was a pentium III tualatin!!!) Now, what I was wondering is what is a appriote idle temp for a stock D 945 with a aftermarket cooler?

I am running a artic cooler freezer 7 as seen here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134 that I picked up at the time of the build on sale. It had good reviews and seemed capable of cooling the cpu fine, but the cpu idles at 54 to 56C and that seems a little high to me. I used the rice method of applying grease, and seated it twice to ensure it would have good coverage but remain thin. I am running an open case right now until the new case gets here from newegg so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

So is 56C too hot for idle? Or should I look into a new cpu cooler?

It is a bit high, but the important thing is the load temps because idle temperature readings are never accurate.

when I use hardware Monitor and prime 95 it doesnt seem to go above 62C. but that seems a little high, I was really hoping to keep it in the low 50's under load. I have tried moving the heatsink around to pick air up from different directions, and doing that I got it 1C cooler when I pull air from the bottom of the case, is the cooler just not enough? Or do Pentium Ds just run that hot? I've heard of them running stock at like 90C but like I said, I was hoping to achieve something cooler.

Honestly it's not a great cooler and pentium D's do run very hot. What are your ambient temps? They play a huge roll in what you can expect.

Ok, hwm reports that ambient temp is 34C, but when I stopped prime95 it says the cpu temp is 46C which is awesome. I was getting the 56C idle reading from the BIOS hardware information. Which information should I be trusting?

hwm = Open Hardware Monitor?

Where are you getting your 34c ambient temp reading?

34C is 93f
