Need help with M5A97

Thread Starter
Well my old mb fried a while back so I ordered these and got them in the mail about 3 days ago:

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=68820&vpn=PHII960%20%26%20CM101A%20%26%20M5A97&manufacture=Bundle%20Deals&promoid=1261
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=70136&promoid=1261

Stripped everything from my case, blow out all the dust and cleaned everything up to install the new parts.

Get everything in, plug it in and hit the power.

Get the led and long short short beeps for memory error.

Been trying everything I can to get them working but still no luck.

Things I've done so far:

Make sure ram is fully seated and all cords firmly plugged in.

Pulled motherboard out for testing.

Tested without graphics card and hard drives etc.

Tried each stick individually in all four slots.

Used MemOK button on motherboard.

Cleared CMOS with jumper and by removing battery.

Tested PSU with multimeter, seemed fine, didn't test under load though.

I unfortunately don't have access to any other psu, ddr3 ram or motherboard to test with.

It seems to me that the ram might be incompatible with my board, guess I should've checked the QVL more carefully (the C9D3K2's are on it, my C9D3B1K2's are not)

So my plan is to order a new set of RAM (also a new DVD drive, my old one just died), just wondering if there's anything else I should check/test first?

Not to be rude, but that MOBO is the oddest beast of AM3+ MOBOs I've seen ever.
I think Asus screwed up on that one, seriously.

I honestly considered that MOBO for ASUS and finally read all the feedback on newegg and slashed it from my list.
Obviously I went Gigabyte. But, not only Gigabyte, that Asus M5A97 is just a SOB for AM3+.

Simply put: Do everything in your power to get a refund or exchange for a different board
and move on. That board actually makes me nervous.

My first choice would be Gigabyte, but ASUS is generally a little better. Except for that bastard M5A97 and maybe some others. (I don't upgrade MOBOs often)

Most boards (including the M5A97) have full compatibility with a large number of brands of DDR3 memory. If the frequency exceeds what the board is rated for, it auto-defaults to match the board's rating. The compatibility list is just a set of modules the manufacturer has tested the board with. Just because the memory is not in the qvl does not mean it won't be compatible. I could be wrong though. Try resetting the CMOS jumper.

The M5A97 is a quality board in general thumb.gif

I forgot to add it before, but I did try clearing CMOS too.

Not sure if ncix will allow me to refund an opened item, especially now that I've modded the IO panel. It didn't lineup with the back ports frown.gif

I'd try getting hold of another set of memory modules. Can you borrow a stick from a friend?

Haven't had any luck borrowing yet. Don't have a lot of local pc enthusiast friends, most have macs, laptops, or older systems.

The M5A97 is not bad at all for the price, it's just picky with memory. I own one and sold a lot of them at work and never got a return so far. Just follow the QVL and you'll be fine.
