It's going to be inherently less efficient, because the heat needs to go into the base of the heatsink (unless its an HDT, then it could go into the pipe) then it has to be carried up the heatpipes. Some heat will be transferred to the fins but overall, there's more heat resistance. Heat can be more easily transferred to the fluid directly from the copper core block than if it had to go through long heatpipes.
