Intel ICH10 vs Marvell 9128

Intel ICH10 vs Marvell 9128

Why:
I am not too bright in terms of SSDs, and mainly I'm making this for people to see the basis of the performance of these two ports. Special thanks to Sean Webster for answering my questions beforehand and basically convincing me to do this.

System Specifications:
Motherboard: Asus P6X58D-e
CPU: i7 930 4.4GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 9-9-9-20 1600MHz
SSD: Samsung 830 128GB

Marvell 9128 AS SSD Benchmark:

Intel ICH10 AS SSD Benchmark:

To my untrained eye, I see a decrease in 4K R/W and 4K-64Thrd R/W, and according to every thread I have read, these speeds determine the speed of Windows.

Sorry for the insufficient explanations, this is my first time doing something like this.
I'd like some suggestions to make this better.

This is because the Intel ports are SATA 2.  If you had a board with SATA 3 Intel ports and if the Samsung 830 were connected to one of them, then the performance would be superior to the Marvell ports.  So I think that the only thing you can do really is wait until you're able to upgrade to a board that has SATA 3 ports that are controlled by the Intel chipset.

Really, your only option is to replace motherboard + CPU. Unless you're willing to do that, can't really do much about your present situation. In real world usage, though, you'd be pretty hard-pressed to notice a difference between SATA2 and SATA3 (even on native Intel controller).

I did buy a new board. I was actually doing this because some people want to see some benchmarks comparing these two ports.

From what I can see, it looks to me like the Asus P6X58D-e doesn't have any Intel-controlled SATA 3 ports - just SATA 2.

You are correct. I just downloaded the manual for that motherboard and it only uses the Marvell 6gb ports. Just about all of the 1156/1366 socket motherboards use the Marvell connectors if they even offer them. I know I have an Asus P7P55D-E PRO and it uses the same connectors. My other P55 board is a MSI P55-GD80 and that does not have native intel 6gbs ports either.

Yea, if you look around, people are still wondering whether they should use the Intel SATA 2 ports instead of the supposedly "faster" Marvell SATA 3 ports.

I know when I got my SSD I was recommended to just use the regular SATA 2 ports. They still work really well as it is. Granted the benchmark numbers aren't going to be any where near what you get with the 6gb connectors but can't really do nothing about that unless you buy a new platform.

Actually, the 6GB connectors perform worse than the SATA 2 ports. So if you are on the x58 boards, normally just got for the Intel port. I also experienced some longer boot times for the Marvell having to go through the Marvell boot thingy.

Intel only added SATA3 support in Cougar Point (6-series chipset). All Intel motherboards released before that would have to use 3rd party controllers for SATA3.
