Help with overclock

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
Hey, so i'm not quite sure what the deal is with my configuration. I've overclocked my pentium d 820 on an Asus p5wd2 955X chipset sucessfully to 3.6 ghz on my air cooling, and run dual prime 95 stress test for about 15 hours with no errors. However, despite my stability in prime 95 when i run newer games (HL 2, and FEAR) my system reboots after about an hour of play. But this problem does not happen with games like HL 1 or CS 1.6. Now my first guess is that it's perhaps my video card which isn't overclocked at all... it's a 7800gt. I read somewhere that under full load it runs about 200watts. I run a 550watt antec powersupply. I'm thinking well since my Pentium D is a power hog it might be just running out of power, but i also am thinking why does it take about an hour to kick in? (Note: this does not happen with any overclocking, but happens with even an overclock of ~200 mhz) Or am i just stupid and forgetting to change something in the BIOS (Note: i have tried changing voltage to CPU with no sucess) No, I haven't checked if this occurs at every overclock even 5 or so mhz. Any help is very much appreciated because i'm confused.

Mmm looked over it, my problem is not a simple "I have no idea how to OC problem" it's more of a advanced problem. Unfortunately that tutorial isn't going to cover the specifics of my problem. Any other suggestions?

Well It would probably help to word your thread title better. I dont know much about Intel, so I'm not much help. Try and word your question/thread title better and your bound to get better responses. And bumping this wont hurt

CPU = ~150W x 2 (if not more)
GPU = ~200W
RAM = ~10W
HDD = ~10W x 2

You're looking at 530W right there. This is just an estimate and still doesn't include the power the mobo itself takes.... You're pushing that Antec pretty hard.

I thought Pentium D 820 was like 95W or is that only at stock? and 150W would be it after the OC?
