Swiftech Apogee Drive II - Running without heatsink ?

Hi

Is workning on the part to my build, and already got some great help here thumb.gif

http://www.overclock.net/t/1282676/complete-wc-z77-itx-setup-check-before-buy/20#post_17763421

Is planning to use the Swiftech Apogee Drive II

http://www.swiftech.com/apogeedrive2.aspx

My problem is that the total heigh with heatsink on is just to big - The "setup" will be something like this (Paint artist biggrin.gif)

The size of the Apogee Drive II is:

From the copper base plate:
- With heat sink: 61.5 mm
- Without: 43 mm

Will there be any problem running this thing without heatsink on, when there is a decent airflow right on top ?

Regards Henrik

If you're asking if your cpu can be run without a heatsink - it cannot. You'll fry it during your first boot sequence.

If you are referreing to the heatsink that rests atop the pump, I'm pretty sure you would be ok without it. MCP35x's normally run without one. But it kinda makes the look of the Drive, don't you think? Couldn't you perhaps reposition the rad/fan to better accommodate your Apogee Drive?

If you are asking something else, forgive me, but I do not understand.

Its the heatsink on top of the pump thumb.gif

Is planning a custom case (Very small), so cant really reposition things around much, have been trying the last week biggrin.gif ..

About the look, it does look great on the pump, but could make a nice custom cover plate insteed - Something like a 3mm acrylic plate with holes (To let the heat out).

Since it will be getting some air from the fan on the rad from above, I think it may be ok. you could always slap some low profile sinks or something on there too ;l

That little heatsink probably doesn't do THAT much, though I wouldn't take my word for it tongue.gif

I believe that's what he's referring to going by the layout shown in the image.

OP: Are you using a HTPC case? I don't think there'd be an issue as the heatsink is mainly there to help remove heat from the pump as it's directly on top of something it's trying to cool and you have fans above it it looks like.

Edit: OCN is screwing up for me so I didn't see any of the posts. With your custom case, as you're going custom, could you not just increase its height by 2-2.5cm's?

Maybe I could just mill something like 10mm of the heatsink, but would perfer to be running without redface.gif

Would love not to go with a bigger case redface.gif ... It would be the most easy way and also the best, but is really trying to keep it VERY small, and love the challenge in it redface.gif

You're more than ok not using the pump heatsink. Only real downside I could think of is more heat would stay with the pump over the waterblock. This wouldn't probably hurt the pump, but it will more than likely raise your temps a little bit, but nothing to worry about. If you can get the clearance by removing that heatsink, do it. Just make a nice cover plate or something along those lines.

You could always get some smaller ram or mofset sinks, file them down, and put them on top of the pump if you really wanted to.

I wouldn't take the heatsink off. These pumps run very warm. If you want to take it off, I'd recommend looking for a copper low profile heatsink to jimmy on on top.

Do you think they run warm enough that it would matter with a rad/fan directly over it? I would figure that would help dissipate the heat some.
I do agree with you that it would be best to keep one on there, but I just don't have empirical values to weigh.
