Twinnuke's post actually provided no solution at all if you actually read it. He states if you're unable to distinguish between a video game and reality then you're incapable of any advanced thinking. Then all he does is state how he was raised and that he turned out alright. I don't see a solution to OPs question here, just an example of how he was unaffected by playing those types of games.

Ohh *facepalm* I thought Twin was the other guy defending his own post to be honest ^_^. Sorry for the confusion. We'll my long post seems pointless now doesn't it? rolleyes.gif

His "advice" comment was to stand up for himself, which can be accomplished in several different ways. Obviously most people thought he just meant to argue with his parents to get what he wanted. But having a civil conversation with his parents and presenting his side of the issue while acknowledging theirs is standing up for himself. Parents should be willing to talk to their children, hear what they have to say, listen to it, and tell them what they think about their side and why. Being told what to do, no questions asked when you're old enough to have a constructive talk with a parent is why we have adults who just listen to whatever they are fed from the media. When you're raised all your life to take everything you hear as fact, you don't question anything and never really learn anything.

This isn't to say he needs to doubt what his parents tell him, their decision may be well founded. But he should sit down with them and at least hear their reasoning so he can better understand the why. Rebellious actions are often due to a lack of understanding and a desire for attention, as they might finally get some real communication once they've disobeyed. Some may say this is unfounded, others will disagree, that's fine. Learning is a great thing, so are different opinions and experiences that are shared; they allow you to form a better understanding and ideology on the subject. My opinions are based on what I've learned from academia and personal experiences, of both friends and myself.

What I find funny about all of it is, you're 16. You may have paid for that rig, but $0 on the electricity or internet. You have no dog in the fight. They take away those 2 key components and you're offline until you move out.

You can still play fps games but you'r parents doesn't have to know of it, if you catch my drift.

I paid my neighbors 10 dollars a month to use their Wi-Fi when we lost our internet for a few months, if your parents take away your electricity then they've got some serious control issues (unless your rig is drawing like 1000W idle and is raising the power bill by a ton, just put it to hibernate more often then)

Thread Starter
--Update--

Following the advice of several helpful posters on this thread, I talked this over with my parents, this time taking a different approach than ones I used before. Instead of using reasons like the amount of money I spent on the computer and the overwhelming majority of my peers that are allowed to play FPS, I presented a list of things I enjoy about FPS games and why I thought the violence issue could be overlooked (instead of saying it wasn't an issue). Together with fresh memories of me fixing my mom's laptop, helping my sister with her e-reader, etc (and showing them this thread!!), they agreed with me and decided I should have some freedom as long as I continue holding up my responsibilities. I can't say there aren't some beliefs they hold that still anger me, but they're out of my way about this so I'll just keep the FPSs out of theirs and things should be fine.

Nice my friend. The calm approach is much more suitable than the angered approach (that a lot on this thread were suggesting.....).
