Closed headphones for gaming

Thread Starter
I'm buying headphones for gaming only, but I want closed ones. Most gaming headphones that come recommended are open, but closed is a must for me since I don't want much(or any) sound heard around me.

I came across Beyerdynamic's DT770 Pro, Sennheiser PC 350 and Audio Technica ATH-A700. Which one is best for gaming-only, I play BF3 mostly. Open to suggestions for other headphones.

Mic is not a must feature, it's easy enough to get the Zalman clip-on mic. I'm willing to spend about 250€ on it, will go above if it's worth it.

I think the A700 is best choice. It retains most of the huge soundstage of the AD700s while being closed back and isolating more.

I have the A700s and a pair of sennheiser px 360's. They are both fantastic headphones, and both have their different suits. The A700s are great stay at home headphones, but the sennheiser px 360's give me similarly great sound quality while on the road.

Good luck thumb.gif

Hey thanks for the your input, sorry I've not responded earlier.

I can get the A700 for about 300 USD, DT-770 for 250 USD, Sennheiser PC 350 for 235 USD. Much more than I would give on sites like Amazon I see, but I figure I'd pay about as much if ordering from outside Croatia due to shipping/taxes/customs, if not even more.

Also I'll be getting a sound card most likely, which would be better the Creative X-Fi Titanium fatality, Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium or something like an Asus Xonar. If Asus which one exactly, there's like D1, D2, DX/XD, DG, DS etc.

Went with the DT-770's Pro Limited Edition 32 Ohm version. I can say I'm very impressed, but these are my first good headphones so I can't really compare it to anything(except gaming headsets like the Logitech G35 or anything Razer which all my friends have).

Amazing sound all-around, but I think I need a sound card for these too. Sound isolation is awesome, big plus for me.

Bad things are, too short a cable (only 1.6 meters, definitely need an extension cable), and I grabbed velour pads from Beyerdynamic that are advertised to fit the DT-770's, but the LE version is just slightly bigger than the regular DT-770's I'm guessing and doesn't fit properly. Will try to fit the pads later again.

After prolonged use of the headphones, I really need a sound card to drive these properly. As I'll be using the headphones a lot more than the speakers(about 80% gaming, 10%music, both driven by the headphones, and 10% movies which I'll output to speakers) I wondered which sound card would fit best out of these:

Asus Xonar D1
Asus Xonar DX
Asus Xonar D2
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro (only creative card I can purchase)

The Xonar D2 is the most expensive choice(more than double the price of the DX), but if it will drive the headphones better so be it. These headphones apparently need a lot in terms of an amp, which one of these cards will be best?

Basically the headphones require a lot more 'power' I guess, and I'm interested in an amplifier for them, though it'd be nice to get it built-in the sound card, so I don't have to purchase separately. Also I'm thinking of leaving the PC speakers on the onboard audio(unless the sound from the card will be a lot better).

If you've got the cash then get the ROG Xonar Phoebus soundcard , not only is the clarity amazing but the because it requires a 6 pin power connection the sound level is simply brutal, the only down side is they are quite new and the drivers are in beta, so the first set of drivers clashed with BF3 and punkbuster but there is a firmware update on the ROG website to rectify this which I downloaded and tested successfully. All I need to do now is upgrade my headset.
