After Skype freezing up my computer for what it seems to be the 20th time and trying every possible fix online I have decided to not use it at all. What is a good alternative that I can use to just talk to people, keep in mind I just want to talk to people from my computer to their computer and not call land lines. I've tried ventrilo in the past and stopped using it cause you need a server, I just want to get on the program and talk to people, please help me with this issue because I would like to speak to my friends. Thank you.

I've used VOIP services for years due to online gaming. Ill share some of my opinions on the 4 main programs that are currently the most popular
Skype: Free, but glitchy and filled with adds. Also, cannot join others unless invited to their call. cannot mute individuals
Vent: Good voice quality, servers are not free, working in depth options for changing volume on individuals ect.
Mumble: Similar to Ventrilo, a good 2nd option in my opinion. Not as refined as vent.
TeamSpeak: TS is ok, i used it back in version 2, dont know if the voice quality has improved. servers are expensive and voice quality is not as good.
Skype is currently my most used program, it seems to me that every update since microsoft bought the company has been a downgrade, new glitches less features ect.

Note you can very easily set up your own Vent server (and the others too I suppose) on your machine, just have to open the port for it of course.

mumble requires the use of a server. You could try xfire or steam chat to talk to your friends, as they both use voice with no need for a server. if skype keeps crashing your system you might try cleaning your registry.

Wait does Steam chat allows more that 1:1 chat? Also the reason I don't use Steam chat much is because if I play a game from Steam that uses voice chat, sometimes the voice chat feature doesn't work until I hang up on my friend.
