so i can get either card for basically the same price and would like to sli/crossfire in the future
i run a single 1080p monitor
i also play a large variety of games bf3,skyrim,aoe 3, gta 4, the witcher, et etc...
i want to overclock to the cards fullest potential and maybe even put it on water iin the near future
so my question is what card would be better for my needs 7970 directCuII Top or 670 directCuII?

If its only between those two options, and only those two, the 670. The 7970 DCII has locked voltage, and early versions had poor mounting so they overheated.

Why ASUS Direct CU II. Why not Gigabyte Windforce. the Gigabyte HD 7970 Windforce can be had for USD 450

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125413

And the windforce cooler is capable of handling 1250+ Mhz overclocks

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/02/08/gigabyte_radeon_hd_7970_oc_video_card_review/8

"While idling at the desktop, the stock GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970's temperature was 34 degrees Celsius while the fans were running at 20%, and extremely quiet. Under full load the temperature increased to 67c, however fan speed only increased to 34%. We did not have any issue with the fans at this speed. On the overclocked GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970 we had fan speeds set to 80%, which was not as loud as most video cards, and helped remove a ton of excess heat. At idle, the video cards temperature was 25 degrees Celsius. Under full load with fans still at 80% temperature only reached 56c. "

FYI thats HD 7970 at 1300 Mhz on an open test bench with temps at 56c with fan speed at 80%. Even with lesser fan speeds and a closed case you should not have a problem keeping temps below 70c.

You should be more concerned about cooling efficiency and overclocking . In those areas Gigabyte does not disappoint. If you like the ASUS Direct CU II one thing you should do is speak to ASUS Direct CU II HD 7970 TOP users and ask about any locks on voltage OC.

Thats what I am trying to tell. Its not worth spending more than 450 bucks. Because you can get all the performance thats possible from a HD 7970 chip with this card. anything more I don't see value in it. In fact I like the Gigabyte HD 7970 looks . Though for you thats not the case. But be sure to check up on ASUS Direct CU II TOP HD 7970 not being voltage locked.

why not an asus card? they seem to have a good reputation with good reviews, what would you recommend?

If you can get the airflow to the top card through the gap it will be OK I did this with my old SLI setup with a 1 slot Gap, without the fan top card was 5 deg hotter.

Also the top of my 280's had 10 times the heat coming off them vs my 670 i cant even feel heat coming off the top of the card.
