VGA can't get above 1600x1200

Thread Starter
The DVI port on my monitor just died and I switched over to the VGA input, I thought I could get by that way for a while (I mostly program, no gaming) but it wont go above 1600x1200 (native is 1920x1200)

Why is that? VGA isn't restricted to that res so why can't I go above it.

I have a HD4850X2 that is using a DVI-> vga adapter right now

Try a different screen to rule out VGA and the monitor. If you have issues on the other monitor, it could be issues with drivers/configurations or hardware.

Tried a different VGA cable and a different adapter, same result. I think it's a hardware or monitor limitation on the VGA port.

So I just ordered this monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001551

and will probably be putting my 26" up for sale.

How exactly were you setting the output resolution for the monitor?

Assuming Windows 7, you can go into control panel under Appearance and Personalization, click Adjust screen resolution, click Advanced settings, click Monitor tab, uncheck (Hide modes that this monitor cannot display), click apply, click Adapter tab, click (List all modes), choose the one you want, click apply.

Did you do this?
