Keep Zenbook or return and wait for X1 Carbon?

What do you guys think? I jumped the gun last night and ordered an ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 off Amazon for $1079.00 - $100 gift card (Promo).

Today I was just looking and saw that the Lenovo X1 Carbon should be out next month(August 15). It looks great and I feel it would last longer since you can actually upgrade/replace many of the parts. (I assume, you could on last gen's X1.)

The screen on the Asus is a higher resolution, but I've heard complaints of backlight bleed. Also heard some getting Sandisk SSD's that are not as good as the others receiving ADATAs.

That seems to be the only advantage of the Asus over the X1 besides price probably. (Cheapest X1 right now is about $1000, with no SSD.)

I suppose I can just hold onto the Asus for a few weeks until more details are revealed on the X1.
Not sure if I should open it or not though since I don't want to be charged a restocking fee. (Not sure if there actually is one, I know there used to be at least.)

Thanks! thumb.gif

Noone? It comes tomorrow.

I really need some opinions on if I can open it or not... I'd like to try it out, but not if it's going to cost me.

I've recently had the opportunity to evaluate a handful of ultrabooks at work, including a similar model to the one you just purchased. That is the slightly older ZENBOOK UX31E. Overall, I found the UX31E to be the worst model I looked at.

Now, the UX31A addresses two of the cons of the older model: the lack of a keyboard backlight and an off-brand WLAN (Atheros) which doesn't support WiDi. However, there are many shortcomings that ASUS brought over from the UX31E to UX31A: non-upgradeable RAM soldered to the motherboard, tiny T5 Torx screws on the chassis that will strip if you even look at them the wrong way, a case that attracts fingerprints like no other, and a "warranty void if removed" sticker covering the connection between the SSD and motherboard. Plus the games ASUS is playing with installing two very different SSD models, as you already noted. The only positive feature of the ASUS is the 1600x900 display and that wasn't nearly enough to win me over.

Whether or not you can open the box is probably a better question for Amazon.

Thanks! Everything you pointed out were concerns of mine. Mainly the inability to upgrade or replace just about anything... The 1080p display would be nice, but on a 13" I doubt I'll miss it vs 1600x900.
I just hope Lenovo pulls it off with the new X1.

X1 Carbon will be more like $1200-1300. In terms of build quality, nothing can beat that X1 - carbon fiber and magnesium have a much higher strength/weight ratio than aluminum. It's footprint, weight, and thickness are all roughly the same as a Macbook Air 13".. but of course, it has a 14" panel. Keyboard on the X1C will almost definitely be better than the Zenbook Prime's (not that the Zenbook Prime's is bad.. you just can't beat a Thinkpad keyboard in terms of feel and ergonomics). Nobody knows on battery life, but I'd guess the X1C will have less battery life by 30 minutes to 1 hour. Asus will probably win on the screen, but there's more physical area on the X1C screen so that might be helpful, and you'd have to scale the Asus to 125% to make it readable (reading at native res on a 15.6" 1080p panel for a couple hours causes eye strain for me, and I have great vision; 13" 1080p is 37% denser), making the real estate closer to 1600x900. Going off past Thinkpads, I'd wager that the X1 Carbon will be one of, if not the easiest Ultrabook to upgrade internals (RAM, SSD) in. Lenovo is pretty smart about this stuff.

So it's hard to say. Zenbook is probably a better deal on paper, Lenovo has a lot of "intangibles" (build quality, service, driver support etc.) which add to the cost. As an example on the drivers.. Lenovo still releases new drivers for pretty much any Core 2 laptop, and those are 5 years old. It's hard finding much/any laptops with new drivers more than 1-2 years after release. Example, Thinkpad T40 from 2003, with new drivers from this year, with support for Windows 7(proof: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT036127 ) . OTOH, Asus G1 from ~2006 or 2007 has a Core 2 Duo, and NO Windows 7 drivers, only XP and Vista 32-bit drivers. http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G1/#download . Not that anyone keeps laptops for so long, but you won't have to worry about finding Windows 9 or Windows 10 drivers for a new Thinkpad.

I'm looking forward to the X1 Carbon as well. If you'd like another option to consider while you're waiting on the new X1, the Samsung Series 9 (NP900X3C) is the current leader in my tests. It also sports a 1600x900 resolution and is smaller (12.3" x 8.6" x 0.5" vs. 12.8" x 8.8" x 0.7") and lighter (2.55 lb vs. 2.87 lb) than the ASUS ZENBOOK. It uses a unique dual-channel heatsink+fan solution for CPU cooling that is very quiet. The only negative mark it received from me is that it also has non-upgradeable RAM soldered to the motherboard.

I figured it would cost a bit more. I can probably save a bit if they off a HDD option and just upgrade to an SSD. But like you said, you get the quality and the long term support. Not to mention the upgrades.
As for the battery life, it was relatively low on the current X1, but there was the slice battery and it could charge to 80% in 30 minutes. So long as they keep those, I can't see it being much of an issue.

I've looked at the Series 9 and it seems like a nice machine, but for what you get I don't feel it justified the premium over the Zenbook. ($1099.99 vs $1299.99)
School doesn't start until the end of August, so the X1 Carbon will be released by then so I guess I'll just hold off.
