older xbox

Thread Starter
im thinking of getting an xbox but i was going to buy the older one and mod the case. but i was wondering if i modded the case then would it be possible to like upgrade the CPU/GPU as well as the chipset and like ram i guess? would i be better off and getting a newer one and modding it? id like the challenge, but dont wanna waste money.

also is it possible to change out the dvd drive and use a slim blu-ray?

You can't take change the cpu gpu or ram, there all on one solid pcb. When I took apart my xbox I found that the dvd drive was connected via a sata port, but it was power by some non molex connector. So... if you wanted to do some modding you might be able to get a blue ray drive in there. Hope this helps thumb.gif

By older one,do you mean the orginal xbox or the xbox 360? As for as upgrading cpu/gpu area, microsoft doesn't allow any room for hardware upgrades. You can't put a blu-ray in a xbox.

You are better off buying an orginal xbox or a newer 360.

I wouldn't mess with the DVD drive they are very sensitive, they have some sort of protection and if something is wrong with the DVD drive or it's been replaced then the Xbox won't power on.

Would it be possible to gut the Xbox completely and put some PC components in there instead? I just think that could be kinda cool.
Like a little HTPC xD

I'm sure it's possible. The main restriction would be the heatsink/heat dissipation since it isn't very wide. You'd also need a little adapter for the PCI/PCI-E slots so you can lay the card(s) flat, since you definitely won't have room for those to stand up.

The only performance "modd" you can do on the xbox is replace the hard drive with a much bigger one or an ssd since it works over the regular sata protocol.

Or you know, things like 12v fan mod, installing more fans, flashing the DVD drive, JTAG'ing it, RGHing it, etc.
