Before I even reply this is going to be a very dangerous and easily heated debate. While I'll explain my choice I will say that EACH game offers something different. HoN being the bigger rip/copy but it is also a bit faster in terms of play. LoL is different enough to stand around for the long run and Dota offering you the normal experience you'd expect if you came from the original.
__

Dota 2 for my vote. Played Dota1 for quite some time, came back and realized it's been rebirthed and is still better than the current other moba options. Played LoL for ~2 years and dropped $640.00 but their hero design and lack of intriguing features got old to me. I supported a company to start and no longer do because my views on hero design(among game philosophy) is quite different. Dota2 executes what I enjoy in a moba as well as heroes.

I have almost ~600 hours in Dota2 at around ~600 games and currently am in the "Very High" skill queue(not like that means much, but meh). I purchased HoN in beta and played it for no more than ~100 games. It was more so a filler and never really enjoyed it as much as Dota on the WCIII engine. Played League of Legends for ~1340 games. As noted I did enjoy my time but just grew tired of it.

I've always enjoyed Dota hero design(albeit some were dumb and needed reworks like they're currently getting). There's such a bigger dynamic to Dota and many more ways to go about things after hero selection(even in hero selection!). Hero selection as we all know varies based on your skill level at which you're queuing, game type and current meta. I feel with LoL you have massive hero overlap in what roles said heroes fill and it's to the point where it's pick what executes BETTER for said role and not something else. Things may have changed(?) now but when I was last playing was when Graves came out.

You also have a lot smaller mechanics in Dota which are just as important as the more obvious ones(tower kills, etc). Creep stacking/pulling, denying(not as big of a deal as most people make it seem), etc. As I stated I enjoy hero design better--this also rolls into more enjoyable lane setups/options. Duo mid, trilane, suicide solo/safe solo as well as the standard 2x1x2 / 2x1x1x1jungle lanes of course.

Aside from the game itself I've always enjoyed streams in my off time and castings and I feel Dota's following has really helped this grow and made it an enjoyable time. Casters like Tobi, Purge, Lumi among the many.

In the end it's preference like most things. =)

Played all 3 of them, enjoying HoN most. I just couldn't get into LoL, hated the visuals and the playstyle. Dota 2 looks a lot like LoL but plays like HoN. Meh.
But I'm not happy with S2 (HoN developers) becoming greedy all the time, I took a 90 days break from it once Diablo 3 was released, came back to see that they became even greedier :x

Played and owned all 3. I play hon the most, dota 2, and only league when my 12 year old brother wants to play with me.

I like the mechanics of hon, and how it feels more smooth and fast paced compared to dota 2 and league.
Dota 2, sometimes still feels they have that classic warcraft .5 second delay, but i havent played in a while.

and league..

I hate the whole rune and skill tree idea. Especially the runes, runes = pay to win. And how unfair is that? I love it when people used to argue saying "league is free", and spend $50 on RP.

Personally, dota or hon. biggrin.gif

Runes lack an RP price. You can't buy runes with money.

S2 just made every non-EA (EA = early access) hero free, reduced the silver prices on skins and they made all gaming modes free (no more tokens). How is that greedy?

For me it goes DotA 2>LoL>HoN

I have about 50 games played in HoN(mostly from the beta), about 300 in LoL, and a couple hundred in DotA 2/DotA.

Over 3k matches in HON between my buddy and I. Best game I have ever played. I would recommend getting a friend to play with to keep the experience joyful, otherwise you will soon realize the community itself is full of characters wink.gif . DOTA 2 seemed to have high delay and the games seemed to progress very slowly, but it is still getting off the ground in my eyes. LOL on the other hand is just not my forte. I cannot get around the art style and the ideas of all the runes. Again, I recommend HoN. It is recently completely free to jump in and play all the heroes and game modes and with the increase in coins per match, you earn extra cosmetic content much faster.

Well, I see HON changed there Hero access structure. Everyone has access to all heroes now. Guess they finally understood how stupid paying for early access to heroes really was. Still not going back though. But, I must say, HON was the best $30 I ever spent. Got tons of enjoyment out of it.

I play LOL, have played HoN, and seen vids of DOTA2. From that, I think LOL is the most approachable. I'm by far no expert in the MOBA style game, and im not really interested in spending tons of time getting "pro" at them. I play them for fun. As such, I found LOL the best suited for me, simply due to its approachability.

/edit

LoL is probably the BEST example of the F2P model I've ever seen. I dont feel 'cheated' in any way. I havent paid a dime for LOL, and probably wont. However, I can still unlock any champion I want, and skins dont change gameplay (so I dont care). Sure, I could pay to get a new champion faster, but I dont see any point. I've got the ones I like, and I dont see it being worth it to buy new ones, which I could just get for free later.

For me it's lol. first time I played it, it didn't take long to get use to it and even if I lost I still had fun and sometimes felt like a winner any ways.

dota2, way too complicated for a noob, I remember playing dota on and off years ago and it never felt as complicated as dota2 (yeah I know, very odd) dota2 is way too frustrating for me, no matter what I cannot get use to it.
