Help me decide on 660ti or HD 7870

I've always had NVIDIA up until now. Well, I'm using a borrowed HD 4870 currently, but other than that, I've only used NVIDIA. I decided I wanted to try ATI (yeah, I know, AMD) out, but I just want to make sure I'm not making a mistake by not spending the extra bit for the 660 ti (when it's released).

Some information for you: I'm trying to start running a gaming live stream, so of course I want the games to look as beautiful as possible. I heard a rumor that NVIDIA cards generally run better than ATI cards assuming AA and AF are turned off, but if AA and AF are turned up, the ATI cards will outperform the NVIDIA cards.

Is that rumor true? And if so, I assume I should go for the HD 7870?

I'm using the HD 7870 and I'm loving it. Running BF3 on ultra and im averaging around 65 FPS. It's an awesome card. No regrets.

The 7850 is much better value, It overclocks well past 7870 speeds for alot less $$$,

I would wait for 660ti release to compare benchmarks as no one really knows how well it will perform. We can only guess at this point.

Nvidia's and ati's top performing cards trade blows at different resolutions. The nvidias are usually better with th AA & AF but the 7970's are slightly better than the gtx 680's at higher resolutions 2560x1440 plus. For 1920x1080 gaming nvidia and ati both offer great cars the gtx 670 and 7950 or the 7850 will run great here.

Ati's current pricing makes them an attractive buy right now, where as 6 months ago they were priced higher than nvidia's mid range keplar which made them less desirable, Things have changed now and the 7850, 7950, 7970 are all priced lower than nvidia cards for there point in the market 7870>560ti 7950>670 7970>680

Whats your budget and your monitor resolution. If you intend to spend USD 300 I would recommend going for MSI HD 7950 OC which is available for USD 310 after rebate.

If you want to spend lesser there are some good deals on HD 7870. newegg had the MSI HD 7870 for USD 270 (USD 250 after rebate). But its again gone upto USD 300 (USD 280 after rebate). So just keep watching for a good deal. HD 7870 at USD 270 (USD 250 after rebate) is a fantastic deal.

I prefer to play at 1920x1080, but in my experience thus far, my i5-3570k @ 4.4ghz doesn't like streaming 1080p so much (my internet bandwidth is far more than enough), so I'm kind of forced into 1280x720.

I was originally looking at the MSI 7870 priced at $280 after rebate

As for budget, I really don't want to go any higher than $300. Basically, if I can run Counter-Strike:Global Offensive at max settings comfortably (when it comes out) while future proofing myself (crossfire/sli in the future? My mobo can do either) I'll be more than satisfied.

This card was available for USD 270 (USD 250 after rebate) over the weekend. yeah just watch out for those prices and get one when the price hits those points again.

Yeah, I actually saw that. I was under the impression that it was a permanent price drop until I saw it again. Sad panda I am...

Are you talking about livestreaming? If so, you can stream at a different resolution than you are playing with, if you use software like Xsplit.

Yes you can, but it tends to lower the quality on fine details. If I stream at 720p and play at 1920x1080, text starts looking like crap on the stream. Not really a HUGE deal, but still.
If you get a 7850, then you will be able to handle streaming at 1080p no problem, I do it on my 6950 (about the same stock performance) as long as you have a good quad to match it. CPU horsepower fixes most of the issues that I had with streaming, that's why people like Kripparian with six-cores stream perfectly fine with a 5870 at incredible 1080p quality.

So yeah, I think getting a 7850 for ~$250 and overclocking it is a good idea.
