8gb ram - 45% used idle

Can anyone explain this? I've left my pc on for the night to download The Witcher 2. Only Steam was active the entire night. When I just logged in again, RAM had 49% usage with steam being at the top of task manager (200.000k)

Closed the main steam window (which limits it it like 30mb ram usage) and closed chrome just to see the difference -> still 45% being used. Just wondering why Windows 7 is using so much. Back when I had 4gb ram, it had the same (45% usage, which is around 2gb.)

It's not really lagging my system or anything, just wondering why this happens. (since you lose like 4gb, not that any game will reach 8gb anyway)

hmmm that sounds about right to me, I don't know how much I use when it goes into power saving mode, but just having this browser window and some small applications open I am at 24% with 16GB.

I wonder how 4gb works on W7 then. Since they use about 2gb with internet open, does W7 work slower or can't it reach its full potential with 4gb or something?

It will use more if it has more available, therefore increasing paging performance and such.

Without additional data it has hard to tell where the memory is not being released.
The NT kernel does a pretty good of managing memory, and with introductions of super-fetch (an extension to the PF cache in NT 5.1) in NT 6.0, it will use available memory more aggressively - however super-fetch pages are stored in the memory manager's standby list which does three things:

1. Sits at a low priority level in the memory manager, ensuring that pages in this list can be zeroed and handed out to applications when the demand for memory grows.
2. Provides a system buffer/cache for super-fetch to store its prefetch data.
3. Contains memory pages that have been swapped out of a process working set, BUT are kept resident in memory so that they can be accessed faster the next time an application requires them (this is referred to as a soft fault).

With additional tools such as RAMMap and VMMap, I could tell you if your system *really* is under memory pressure, but 45% on 8GB of RAM appears relatively OK, unless you are experiencing disk thrashing, or noticeable slow performance.

Open up Resource Manager and check RAM usage by process.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM however.... In performance computing, your issue is not that you have 45% usage.... it is you have 55% unused. wink.gif
