I need an ultra quiet, sub $30 cooler that doesn't require board removal (I5 3570K)

Thread Starter
I just posted in the 212 forum asking if that fan requires the removal of the mobo.

In case it does, could you please recommend something? I just retrofit my PC with some upgrades. My Zalman 9700 won't fit the new CPU without a kit I have to buy which I simply couldn't seem to source. That's a moot point now since the board is mounted and I don't want to remove it.

My requirements are simple and to the point.

Ultra Quiet

Within reason of course, I'm running a GTX560 and 2 quiet 120MM Antec fans. I just need something as quiet or more quiet than these. They are inside a P180 case and I only hear a slight hum right now from the stock fan.

Sub $30

I wasn't planning to buy a fan. I was even going to stay with the stock but I decided against it. I don't really need anything huge or super expensive as I have no plans to do any big OCing. If I do OC it will be very modest like 4GHz, nothing stellar or potentially troublesome. This CPU is plenty quicker than my Q6600 was so I'm satisfied.

Clips/Screws on to board as is

This is a big deal. I absolutely do not want to remove the board to put plates, nuts, etc. on the bottom. I need a fan that will clip on to the board like the stock cooler does, or screw on. Whatever mounting system it has, as long as I don't need to do anything with the bottom of the board, I'm cool.

Thanks for any advice.

The 212 has a backplate. I had an arctic cooling freezer 7 I liked, that would fit all your criteria nicely.

I'm surprised that your case doesn't have a backplate cut-out - so many do nowadays. Anyway, the Hyper 212+ (assuming that you meant this, I think the 212 would be the same though) requires that you fit a backplate to the underside of your board, and screw bolts in and everything.

You are going to limit your choice by not having a backplate, so much so that it could just be better to stick with the stock cooler. I'd take a look at the Freezer 7 Pro or whatever Arctic Cooling's more recent version of that might be.

May I ask why you do not want to remove the motherboard? It's a straight forward enough job, that I think almost any one who can use a screwdriver can do.

This,

If you don't do so you're losing Price/Performance, the Hyper 212+ is amazing and exactly what you want. I know taking the board out is a PITA, but having a backplate makes better contact on the CPU which in theory provides better temps. That and you'll be sure that it won't fall off! biggrin.gif

As stated you can always buy the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro. It uses push pins to secure the heat sink to the motherboard so you wont have to remove the board to install it.

Having used both this and the 212+ myself though, there is a huge difference, with only a small difference in price (in fact, the 212+ is cheaper and the 212 EVO which is a small upgrade from the Plus, is like $1 more). I'd really suggest thinking about getting the 212+ and removing your motherboard to fit it. After all, once it's fitted, it's fitted. I mean, most people will fit the cooler and then leave it there for many months if not years, so it's not like you'll have to constantly take out the motherboard anyway.

Yeah, I wish I wasn't so in love with the P180. The P280 is out and is pretty nice but that seems like sinking $100 for no real purpose but to get a new case. As for limiting myself...perhaps. It would make more sense to just use my 9700 if I were willing to remove the board. I'll check out the 7. Thanks.

As I mentioned, I'm not too in it for the temps. I'm getting satisfactory temps with the stock cooler but I just want a better fan...something more quiet and that is better than the stock. I have a constant fear that the stock cooler is going to just stop working, lol. It looks...so...cheap. The 212 is nice but is overkill in this case for what I need. If I were going to remove the board, I might as well hunt down the kit for my 9700 since that's on par with the 212.

Sheer laziness. I know since I did use the screwdriver to put it there in the first place. I am not seeing a huge gain from buying a sub $30 fan which requires a back plate enough to make me want to go in, take my video card off, unplug all my cables and remove the board. Since I won't be OCing I didn't feel it was worth the trouble.

I will check the 7 out. Thanks to all who recommended it.

Has anyone used the Zalman CNPS5X? It's a very old design that they've added to, but seems good too. Any more recommendations would be welcome.

The 212 remains at the top of my list should I decide to remove the board and am still unable to source the kit for the Zalman.

The thing is, honestly, you could probably take your rear fan off the back and attach it to the 212 Plus and it will create little noise. It will take you a half of an hour at best, and will provide you with a secure cooling solution. This WILL BE WORTH IT, considering I've had multiple 212 Plus coolers and they are fantastic, if you can go to 4.5 GHz, why not? Also, if you overclock to 4 GHz the heat generated from the chip is a lot more than from stock (that's just how Ivy Bridge is). It is worth it in the long run and there is no reason why you shouldn't take the little bit of time it takes to do it.

It'll most likely be quieter than the aftermarket push-pin options too!

I think having a bit of trouble (possibly removing you mobo) is definatly worth it if you buy a hyper 212+. I have it my computer with an i5 3570K and I can't even hear it. Temps stay in the (Edit:) mid 30s. Its in your budget and deffinatly worth thr investment and the bit of trouble you may have installing it.
