in the last blackberry phone, i broke the port by picking up the phone off my night table. the charging cable got tangled it pulled perpendicular to the port. i use my phone as an alarm so i tend to pick up my phone pretty fast.

i find that the apple connector and its cable to have a better fit (maybe a tighter tolerance?) and it resists mechanical stress very well compared to microusb.

This is not so much a design change, as a way for people to "buy more", same as Intel changing sockets, 775 ->1156->1366->1155->2011. If you want to use the latest we make, well gonna have to replace everything thumb.gif

Seriously people? This thread is about a change in the dock connector, NOT a discussion of who makes a better phone.

IMO, lock this.

Why are people arguing so much about apple changing the design of the port? I bet the majority of the people here change their processor socket to a different one (AM2 -> AM3 for example) as an upgrade. Similar concept for the iPhone, change down to a smaller port design would remove unnecessary pins that's taking up space.

A lot of archaic pins to keep in a next generation device. Maybe the new connector will support Thunderbolt. Changing the connector is an easy way to prevent people from plugging in incompatible docks/cables.

Didn't the 30 pin last as long as mini usb did? I don't see an issue with them changing it, of course it doesn't matter to me anyway since I don't own any apple stuff.

Everyone is jumping to conclusions assuming that Apple won't make an adaptor.

The fact is we don't know anything except that the dock connector is getting trimmed down by removing obsolete functionality such as firewire support, etc., and that's good since it means they've got more room inside the device to work with.

iMore's already saying that they've heard from their sources that Apple will have an adaptor ready by the time the iPhone 5 launches. And making an adaptor is the only thing that makes sense.

Heck, if Jellybean is as snappy and responsive on upcoming phones as it is on my Nexus 7, it'll be incredible. Haven't had a single issue yet. If they can mantain this, Apple will have lost (in my opinion) their biggest advantage: responsiveness and stability. Can't even remember how many times I've had to do a battery pull/restart/task manager raping of my apps to bring my Android out of a bogged down state.

I love Android, but I have always been a little envious of how stable iOS is. With Jellybean, I believe Apple is in trouble thumb.gif

By the way, does anyone here honestly think that Apple or some third party won't offer an adapter cable?
Apple is trying to push a mirco sim card and saying it will save space, yet they have one of the biggest power/sync connecters. hmmm
So to make a smaller dock adapter will save some space too. about time.

^This, when the first generation iPhone came out you couldn't plug in any headphones besides apple headphones or a few others, limiting is use until an adapter was made. goodness, people talk as if the world is coming to an end....
