Zabbix Monitor question

Thread Starter
I have been messing with Zabbix on a virtual machine to see if I want to use it to monitor all of my stuff at work.

Does Zabbix require that every host you want to monitor has to have some sort of agent installed? In the host monitoring configuration screen it doesn't give you an option to set up a plain old ping monitor. Some of our equipment is not compatible with any of the agent software packages that Zabbix supplies on their website.

Any help is appreciated smile.gif

I don't know about Zabbix specifically, but usually with Network Monitoring Systems, they can do basic monitoring utilizing SNMP (Microsoft feature), or they use a client installed locally. Having a client installed will allow for better control/more info, but for appliances/switches/routers/etc, it's usually just SNMP.

I use Foglight Network Management System (Quest Software) at home, which is free for up to 100 endpoints.

yeah, it looks like the only way to do it is through SNMP or through a "simple host" template they have.

I looked at your Foglight program; don't really like the look of it too much.

Looks like the only thing worth setting up is still Nagios. At least with that I can have a custom front end so I can see what I want to see on the main monitoring window. I just utterly hate setting up all the hosts, services, and groups with Nagios.

In a production environment, System Center Operation Manager is my NMS of choice...then again I am an IT Consultant dealing mainly with System Center products. Management Packs for a lot of stuff out there.

Spiceworks, I avoid like the plague.

We use a mix of EventSentry (application monitoring) and Nagios (hardware monitoring) in an all Windows environment and it works a treat.

Food for thought...
