Is the 7970 worth the extra $130 over the 7950?

Thread Starter
Currently I am running a Catleap 1440p monitor with an Asus GTX 670 DC2T. I just RMA'd my 670 and need a new card, I saw how well the 7950/70s are doing and was going to pick one up, especially with the Twin Frozr on sale for $310. I know the MSI is the best deal but I was wondering if the 7970 is strong enough to make the extra $130 worth it over the 7950. I dont mind spending the money because at this res I would like to get the strongest card possible under $450 but I also dont want to throw my money away if its not worth it in the end. My other option was just to stay with the 670 and pick up a EVGA FTW instead.

So does the 7970 warrant the extra cash? I will be doing heavy overclocking on whichever card I get, as I know the 7xxx series does very well.

I guess the three i have narrowed down are:

MSI 7950 Twin Frozr for $310

EVGA GTX 670 FTW for $400

Gigabyte 7970 for $440

Thank you in advance for any help

Hard to say, the 7950 oc is within 5% with the same clocks as a 7970.
In practical use I doubt you would notice difference between the cards.

Yeap. Considering that 7950 in particular is a 7970 w/o the shaders, I'd rather pocket the difference and spend it somewhere else.

Very similar yes, but it does depend on the game, there are games where the min FPS of a GTX 670 will be close to 15+ FPS higher.

I don't think it matters when the minimum FPS those 2 beasts can pull is 60 fps... lol.

At stock, they are close but if you're gonna "heavily overclock" them as you said you would, the 7950 will pull ahead of the GTX 670 even if you overclock it to its limits.
