A8n-sli DLX/FX55/Ram probs, any help??

Thread Starter
Alright I'm not new to forums and I know how annoying it is to have newbs posting without searching, but I can't find anyone who has this problem so any help would be appreciated, because I think I may be missing a glaring problem.

I got an insane deal on an FX55, I put it in my A8n-SLI dlx and it instantly gave me memory problems. I've been running 2GB wintec AMPO pc3200 in it perfectly fine until I pop in this cpu, now I can't get more than a gig in without it freakin out. I can put it in any slots, and still get it to show 1 gig but when i put in another, still only 1gig, and then when I put in the fourth 512 stick it won't boot, says system failed memory test when you boot. Is there something with the FX55 that doesn't let it run this memory at 2gig dual channel or something. I RMAd the board, got another one and the exact same thing happened. Thanks in advance for the help!!! This forum is tops!

Some people have problems with AMD and 4 x 512mb sticks of ram. I have no problems at all, but it could be because I'm not using a high-preformance CPU, or a high FSB.

Everybody "essentially" has problems with 4 sticks of RAM in your AMD system. It automatically downgrades the memory speed (Some CPU revisions) to DDR333 speeds and puts it to 2T (All CPU revisions), both of which can make the system run slower.
You might have some RAM sticks which doesn't support either DDR333 speeds or 2T speeds.

Secondly, the memory controller is located on the CPU at AMD's latest sockets.

it all ran fine at 2gigs with my 3700+ is there something different with the FX chips or something I'm missing and is there a way to fix this in the bios. I went it and switched it to manual instead of auto and just left the timings at 3338

I say "some" because I have no problems at all. I get slightly better benchmarks with 4 x 512mb than with 2 x 512mb. Gaming, I do much better with 4 x 512mb, then with 2 x 512mb.

Hi and WELCOME to theforum
The FX may need a voltage increase for the memory controler.
I'm wondering if the 3700+ and the FX have the same version memory controler!

Could you post what the stock number was? (The one on the box, often [3 letters]3700[some more] or for the FX [3letters]FX55[some more])

It's quite simple really, you require a Bios update by the sounds of it
