Tokyo (Japana) - Fresh off the heels of Nintendo's announced lineup of titles available for its Wii virtual console service, Sony has said that its own downloadable game platform for the upcoming PS3 console, is growing a respectable library as well, with "about 40" exclusive titles heading to the platform, says Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison.

Not bad at all. I wonder what games are going to be sold online?

Until we get a list of actual games, this is just vaporware IMHO.

And what the heck is Flow and Calling all Cars? They aren't seriously suggesting that random games like this are in the same class as some of those old Nintendo classics.

Yeah, never heard of "Flow and Calling all Cars." There is a list of the 62 games for Wii somewhere in this thread.

Can't you play Final Fantasy 7 for PS1 on the PS3 anyway? I don't see a point to the online thing, because Sony didn't even enter the gaming market before the PS1 and all PS1 games work on the PS3 anyways...

Yep, the PS3 is (allegedly) backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 games. I'm sure 100% compatibility won't happen, there are bound to be some limitations at least of the sort that the PS2 had with some PS1 games.

But, of course, you have to have an original game disc to do that. The appeal of downloadable games is that you don't have to track down and buy the old game CD, you just download it. It's basically a convenience for the PS3, but of course is a requirement for those old cartridge based games, since you can't exactly plug a SNES cartridge into a Wii.

But what you might find is that Sony overcharge for the old games which had legendary status but were impossible to find. And for those lucky people who did find them, kept them untouched. We might find that the price of the " free " online service is offset from the price of the downloadable games. That and the inevitable upgrade from the free service that we'll all eventually need.

I bought a new version of FF7 3 years ago. Wish I never sold the one I had originally bought, but now I have a virtually unplayed version that I'm never going to sell. Eventually I'll just have it framed or something. One of my favorite games ever...

Hey now, Sony's quality may have gone down recently, but they still make some pretty good products (i.e. my MP3 player or my camera)

I don't like where they're going with the Playstation 3, although it hardly can be called a POS. Very capable hardware and has some pretty good games coming out for it. However, I still wouldn't get it.
