To get somewhat back on topic, I don't see how this deal could hurt Apple in any way. EDIT: The next paragraph negates this statement. Afaik, some (most?) of Google's success is because their products are open source and free to share among the public. Doing this also makes the competition more equal so one company doesn't keep all of the goodies from the others (admittedly, this has the potential to dilute innovation). Plus, haven't we all learned to share when we were kids biggrin.gif The closest thing to Apple sharing is their SDK that you have to pay $99/year for.
I believe that Google made this idea not because they want to put Apple down, but to resolve, to an extent, the horrible patent system that is in use. Apple's designs, well at least their software, is pretty much standard today, and I don't see why such a "standard" thing shouldn't be shared. With that said, it could also lead to why Google hasn't made their search engine open source, but I guess there are some things that companies would like to keep exclusive. In Apple's case, it would be everything...If being open source was, in all of its essence, a good thing, then Apple would be hurting themselves by not making their products open to the public. If open source products stagnate innovation, then Google would be in the red, but Apple seems to already have that problem (well, I think they do). If my past two sentences are correct, then Apple would take a double whammy if they made their inventions and whatnot to be shared with everyone. Just my 2cents.gif

They invented marketing technology to the dumb public. Big whoop.

No, they're not; all in all the differences between Android and iOS are much like Intel and AMD during the race for 1Ghz; you can go for either maker and be happy with what you get since everything is so close it doesn't make much difference.

Yeah, it is but that doesn't stop it being a great idea assuming popular enough becomes less vague.

"In other words, Google’s view is that just as there are patents that are standards essential, there are also patents that are commercially essential — patents that cover features that are so popular as to have become ubiquitous."

Who really disagrees with this? I mean when we talk about patent reform on this very forum don't many of us want to see more competition and less legal bludgeoning? The idea of a smart phone certainly predates the iPhone and how many of us really believe that Apple should be the only company allowed to sell a smart phone? Because if they can sue other handset makers into using a different shape, no camera, no slide to unlock, etc. then that company will not be able to effectively sell a competing smart phone.

We can argue about the specifics, whether software patents should even exist, what constitutes a reasonable lic. fee, but can't most of us agree that patents should be helping foster innovation and competition, not stifling them?

Apple is just good at making stuff that already was there, popular to the average Joe. Nothing more nothing less.

This isn't just about phones anymore. Apple as a whole is doing better than Google business-wise and it will probably continue like this for a while.

So Google wants Apple and other companies to create a market for a good consumers were previously not interested in, market it successfully, and then share the wealth with everyone else? Anyone else seeing something wrong with this picture?

What else are Google competing with Apple for? Web browser marketshare? This is completely about phones; Apple's not really much patenting stuff that everyone uses in their Macs, or if they are they're being quiet about it. Apple are much bigger but Android has a higher marketshare.
