TEC Question

Thread Starter
My folding rig, 'DasFolder" in rig list, runs a O/C'd 2700k. Currently I'm running it @ 5.1Ghz on water with a 360mm Black Ice Extreme Rad with three AP-30's pushing. The loop consists of a Modded D5, CPU Block and Vreg Block.

Basically I'm wondering if this TEC would handle the load any better than the loop as it stands.

TEC

With the loop how it is I tend to run ~65Âșc with the water within a degree or two of Ambient.

I don't want to go with the larger quad TEC for two reasons, Price, and I would need a larger PSU.

Thoughts?

It would let you go below the wall you are currently at close to ambient. Because you have 360mm of rad space for just your CPU loop it would be able to handle the extra wattage dumped in from the TEC. I dont know how much more you will gain from the lower temp though since your chip is already clocked pretty high. Does the extra power draw from the TEC really justify a lower temp?

The Single would only net you a couple degrees lower than you already are. You CPU is putting out about 200-220W, and that would be near the maximum for the TEC Block. To get any noticable preformance you would have to get a Quad. It would give you a significant temperature drop. Especially if it was run at full power with insulation. In a little bit I'll give you more exact numbers.

By the way, what is you voltage for the CPU at 5.1GHz.

EDIT:

The Arqtik Calculator gets about 22.9°C delta between water and block temperatures when run at full power. Which sounds about right after losses in the block, which is 5.06°C with 220W load. The delta on the charts shows about 28°C Delta on the TECs.

But you would have to grab another triple rad, assuming you only have one currently.

You current water cooling looks like it has a °C/W of 0.00833. 2°C / (220W CPU + ~20W VRegs). Watertemps would be about 4.66°C above ambient if you got the quad, so that doesn't seem too bad.

Ex: 0.00833 * (220W CPU + 20W VRegs + 320W Quad) = 4.66°C

Running 50 x 102 BCLK on my rig @ 1.5v. I had it stable around 1.495v but was getting random issues so I bumped it slightly to get 14/7 stable. I only have 1 360 in the rig. I used a very small case to hold everything so that the foot print would be minimal.

How much would the quad draw @ full with insulation? The PSU in the rig is a 450w so with the quad I think I would have to put my 850 in there to handle the extra load.

I don't have room for another 360mm without doing a major remodel of the rig, best I could do right now would be two 120mm.

I'm running this 2700k on the bitter edge of sane right now. Thats why I'm thinking about upgrading the cooling to a TEC to get the thermals down to where I'm running the CPU into the ground at full speed MACH OMG. Granted with temps staying below 70°c I can't complain too much.

Whats your ambients?

Looking at a review with your fan/radiator combo, you should be around .014 c/w which would give you a 2.8c rise in water temps with that load.

Thats important in determining what the quad would actually do on that radiator. Can you give a more accurate temperature dt at load?

When I get home today I will pull out my DMM and get you room temps and water temps.

I just took some readings with my Multimeter.

Ambient: 27Âșc
Coolant: 30Âșc
Air Out : 28Âșc

That is the best I can do as my DMM doesn't do decimal places for temperature.

Hey thanks, That puts the radiator right at where I had figured with a .014 c/w ~3c above ambient..

Here is what I get with those numbers.. This should be within a few degrees of actual using the tec quad block on your system, adding another triple would gain you ~4-5c

So I could lower temps to ~45Âșc with a quad DD?

That should give me a little more life out of the CPU.

Yep should as long as the cpu output is correct, might be just a tad higher because I didn't add in the chipset cooling.
