Upgrade for a 775 rig

Thread Starter
I think its high time that I upgrade my LGA 775 right that I bought back in 2007. Its actually a HP Pavillion Elite from before I actually got into computer hardware and such.

I'm not planning on a full part swap - just the key components that actually need upgrading. My current video card is more than adequate for what I do (GTS 450), and if I really need it, I can steal the 2nd 450 from my other rig. I also have a 160GB Intel SSD which I'm definitely going to reuse as a well a couple hard drives.

Here are the proposed parts:
Mobo: Asus Maximus V Formula
(~$300)
CPU: 3770k
(~$350)
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 1600Mhz 16GB (2 x 8GB)
(~$100)
or Corsair Dominator Platinum 1600Mhz 16GB
(~$170)
Cooler: Corsair H100
(~$110)
or Phanteks TC-14PE Red
(~$100)

And a couple red Bitfenix Alchemy sleeved extentions to go with that gorgeous ROG board tongue.gif

And the parts I already have:
Case: CM HAF 932 that I painted just for this build
GPU: GeForce GTS 450 1GB (possibly 2)
SSD: Intel 320 Series 160GB
HDD: WD Caviar Black 1.5TB
PSU: CM Earthwatts 600W

Total cost of the build about $900. I'm feeling good about the parts except for the RAM. The Dominator Platinums are real nice but I don't really have a...need... for them. More like an expensive toy that I could use to delve into RAM OC'ing. As for the cooler, I'm leaning more towards the H100 but that'll be more of an impulse buy when I'm actually at the store.

Does everything seem good (for a lack of a better word)? Any alternate part suggestions?

Thanks in advance

When it comes to CPU cooling, IMO you should go either low end air, high end air, or full blown loop. These CLC's only get around high end air cooler temps (plus that fugly tubing), and a Rasa kit can be had for about the same price. So you have meh vote for the Phanteks.

I was planning on getting a full loop by Christmas anyway so I think going air right now might motivate me enough to take the plunge so to speak.

Originally I was planning on getting the Z77 Sabertooth, but while that thermal armour looks great, I think it restricts a fair bit of CPU cooler possibilities.

Now if only I can find a red version of that Phanteks at my local store... rolleyes.gif

I like the build.
Liquid cooling though for something with a GTS 450?
I guess if its not soley for games thats more the enough though.

What is the machines intended purpose? Entertainment?
Then get a Mobo with features/optical sound, instead of a gamer.
Although I haven't seen all of the Z77 boards.

Hah of course not! I'm 99% sure there are not backplates/full covers for a 450 anyway. That water loop will be a CPU only loop - most likely a 240mm radiator since I don't want to modify my HAF 932. I like overclocking the CPU far more than a GPU mainly because I do quite a bit of CPU intensive work and not much gaming. x264 needs some serious horsepower and every little bit I can squeeze out helps. Uses are mainly video encoding (x264 mainly, but some After Effects stuff as well as Photoshop and the like) and folding (needs no explanation).

But then again, I might end up with some extra cash in my pockets - maybe just enough for a GTX 660 or a maybe even a 670 wink.gif I'd definitely put that under water thumb.gif

But for the time being, even a single 450 gives me the framerates I'm looking for, not to mention the sound levels. That thing is almost dead silent even under full load. Besides, when I start university this September, I don't think I'd have much time to be playing around. But hey, maybe if I'm feeling adventurous I might steal another 450 from my current sig rig biggrin.gif

If you're going into a full water loop at christmas my tips are.. Get a Hyper 212+ now and not a high end air cooler/CLC, simply because you'll only have it for 4 months then you'll be upgrading. Otherwise just get a NH-D14/Phanteks now.

If you can get the Samsung Eco RAM, people refer to this as "WonderRAM". You're looking at 16GB so get 4 sticks of 4GB. Personally you'll never want more then 16GB RAM anyway.
I wouldn't spend so much on a board either, but that's just me. Also some cathodes would look cool too, because I see you're into modding your case!

Seeing as you can get a second GTS450 i'd SLI them to see how they go also. Otherwise you sound like you're fine! You might want to look into a slighty bigger PSU one day however thumb.gif

(that is if you plan to upgrade the graphics card). You might be able to drop to an i5 3570k and 8GB of RAM with a Hyper 212+ and get a 7850 too? If you're gaming at all. smile.gif

EDIT: The 932 can take a triple Rad at stock, you might want to look into that for later! thumb.gif

First of all, +REP

Yeah I completely forgot about the fabled WonderRAM. I'll definitely look into that. However, I'd prefer if they were 2 sticks of 8GB each simply because when/if the time comes for an upgrade, I don't want to spend extra to replace all 4 sticks. I usually do need as much RAM as I can get - my current rig as 24GB simply for After Effects and Sony Vegas.

As for the board, yeah $300 is quite steep - but a ROG board is something I've been looking forward to for quite a while. Especially when I look at the price difference between a lower end board for about $220, the extra $80 (really for more bling tongue.gif) seems quite attractive. In and of itself, $300 is a bit much, but in contrast with a more "consumer" board, it seems quite reasonable.

My current rig is running 2 450s in SLI and they work beautifully. I've starting using that computer less and less for gaming and more for CPU intensive work, so taking the extra 450 really won't affect anything. I don't really game a whole lot these days - not nearly as much as I did last year. A 3570k makes sense for a gaming build, but for what I'm looking to do with it, a 3770k would help a lot.

As for the 360 Rad in a 932, I've looked into that a couple months ago but abandoned the idea for one reason. The third sort of "section" of a 360 rad is pretty much completely covered up by the front I/O panel. It doesn't seem like a lot of air can go through it. Sure, the top cover is ventilated at the back to allow for airflow, and there is even a fan cutout, but it seems very restrictive. If someone can explain or show that there really isn't a noticeable difference, I'm very open to the idea of 360 rad.

Correct me if i'm wrong: Isn't the Phanteks slightly better than a NH-D14?

Yes, the Phanteks is slightly better..
I can't talk much right now, i'm in the middle of a timed exam! I just found out tongue.gif
