Thinking of getting a Macbook......For college

Thread Starter
So I am thinking of dipping into the world of Evil Apple. I want to buy a Mabook for college so I don't have to lug around my G73JH for the days I only have 1 or 2 classes. I was thinking of buying a used Macbook. Any thoughts on this?

With the current prices of ultrabooks, i think its all preference. I personally have a 2010 macbook and its great. They seem pretty reliable so far.

edit: plus Best Buy is currently having an apple sale that'll probably shave ~$150 off retail. That is, if you go the brand new route. If you want to buy one at the apple store, there is also the apple edu discount.

edit again: And if you do go for the newer macbooks, remember that the ram is soldered onto the motherboard so upgrading in the future is outta the question.

So you think it would be worth it do get a mac to use for college? I know that apple gives students discounts and what not.

Personal preference. I hate the Apple OS, but as far as school goes it does everything a non-Apple would do. For graphic design and photo editing I hear they are better. You will get a lot less hardware for your money though.

I got one for college and honestly think that overall it was a decent move. It works out well for me since I have my PC in my dorm room and a mac at classes so having both options is nice. There are times where a mac comes in handy and times where windows is more preferable, but being able to have both is nice. Where one might fail for me at least the other can cover it up. It's nice having the best of both worlds work together for me.

Yep personal preference. I bought one because I like the hardware. I don't really have a preferred os, I have both windows and osx on the macbook. If you like the hardware, buy it. If you don't think its worth it, get something else. biggrin.gif

Apple laptops are good on the reliability front so used is a good path.
I'm finding plenty of C2D, 4GB, 320M GT 13" for around 600 or less. You can possibly get a Macbook Air 13" 2008-2010 (2GB RAM, 64GB-128GB SSD, 13") for around the same as well.

You may be able to still find 2011 models decently cheap with warranty still there (Is transferable)

After futzing around with first a 17" Gateway laptop, then a 10" netbook, and then finally a 13" MBP, I honestly have no regrets with the MBP. The durability, the quality, the challenge of having to learn another OS besides Windows, and so on.

As a kid, I was in that whole immature camp of "Apple sucks! Go Windows, and its customization and freedom and games!" but now I realize that there is a time and place and need for some things, or lack thereof, and because of that, the MBP is my designated work machine.
