yea 8 phases of IR3550, the inductors aren't as good as the UP board's inductors, but the capacitors, the NEC Proadlizer ones are awesome sick!

NICE ONE!

so anyways:

SO anyways guys, I heard this board already has a few WORLD RECORDS under it's belt. One by our OC extrodinaire Sin here!
Sin, you ever think about changing your current main rig to a UP board? Or actually, why on earth is your mainboard not the x79-OC for your current stable main rig?

thank you! Yea i wasn't able to go that high on the other boards, but this one just took it up easily, i have no idea why this would be better other than it is a second gen Z77 board. I didn't even turn off any controllers! lol Like I am surprised thunderbolt didn't pose a problem, but i guess it doesn't. I am not back on top with respects to BCLK, as I am much more of a pure frequency bencher guy than a tweaker.

Anyways thanks! This is the same CPu I have been using since release.

As for my main rig, the X79-UD7 is okay, I actually have two new X79 boards coming in Friday: X79S-UP5-WIFI and X79-UP4.

however I like to always have a G1 board as my main because of the gaming features as i like to play BFBC2 and Age of Empires II with expansion. lol I have other games but I do not like to play them.

Hi Guys,

If you recall last week I posted a question whether I should keep my UD5H if I wanted a hassle free setup and configuration. It was suggested that I go with the new UP5 TH. I took your collective advice and late last week ordered the UP5 TH.

First off I would like to say that it is such a beautiful board. Pictures do not do this board justice. It really is a work of art. I have not set up a new pc since the good old AGP days and looking at this board I was really impressed by the quality of the design and the overall build. My board came with the F3 bios.

It is very well designed and very sturdy. Right now I have the board and my Corsair 850 power supply spread on the floor of my kitchen running my initial test config. I plugged in my 3770K 3.5 I7 and mounted my new Ncctua D-14. At stock it is running a cool 26 Celsius outside of the case.

However I have a problem and I'm hoping that maybe Sin or someone may be able to help.

Before I bought the board I purchased 32GB of G-Skill Ares Low profile DDR3 1600 RAM. The part number is F3-1600C9D 16GAR So I have 4 sticks of 8GB each. The Ares memory is supported on almost every Gigabyte MB. So I figured there would be hopefully no compatibility issues on this one or at least I hoped.

This is G-Skill ARES DDR3-1600 PC3 1280 CL-9-9-24 1.5V F3-1600C9D 16GAR

I cannot get this memory to run in dual channel mode. It works with 1 stick. It works with 2 sticks single channel but it will not work with 2 sticks dual channel or all 4 modules inserted. I get error code 51 which is "memory initialization error occurs". I also tried all 4 sticks independently to make sure it wasn't 1 of the modules. They are all fine by themselves. it did not matter which 2 I put it I still got the same 51 Debug code. With just 1 or 2 memory modules in single channel I can get into the BIOS just fine. Its only on Dual channel or 3 or 4 modules where it stops working. Also initially the BIOS showed the ram operating at 1333 so I bumped it to 1600 and it was fine. The Ares RAM on the box says its designed for "extreme performance" and has "Z77 compatible" and "designed for 3rd generation Intel CPUs" stickers on the front so I figured it should work.

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do or does this memory have to go back? I already returned a set of Corsair vengeance ram because it was not low profile and did not fit with my Noctua but that was before I bought the new board when I still had the UD5H.

If anyone could help me out with this problem I would really appreciate it. G-skill's website does not list any info in regards to this new board and I could not find anything on Gigabyte's site. I already flashed to BIOS ver. F4 and I still get the same problem. As I said I can get it working with 16GB single channel but it will not work dual channel or with 3 or 4 modules inserted. I do not have any other memory to test with so I'm thinking I will have to go and buy 2 sticks of RAM to test this to see if its the G-Skill or some other MB problem. I really hope this board is not the issue as I love what I see so far and do not wish to go with the hassle.

Besides this memory problem this board is wonderful. Despite the fact that Newegg did not package it well it fired up fine initially. The board was packed on the bottom of the box with paper filling on the top. This does not help as UPS throws **** around. If you are going to order this board from New Egg please instruct them to put some packing materials on the bottom and not just put the board on the bottom of the box.

is there any low profile memory you recommend if my G-SKill RAM turns out to be a dud?

Edit: I did some more testing...think I might have figured it out. I don't think it is the memory now. Still not sure 100% but it looks like its the board. When inserted into DDR slot 2 and 4 (the 2 slots closest to the CPU socket) the memory does not work regardless if its single channel or dual channel. Regardless if its 1 or 2 modules its the same error 51 on those 2 memory slots. Slot 1 and 3 the 2 slots farthest from the CPU socket they are fine but they run single channel. I was putting each stick into the 1st DIMM slot so it was working on all the ram independently. So The BIOS shows that channel B is working and I have 16GB when both are inserted into 1&3. The memory diagram however in the manual says that you have to have 1 &2 populated for dual channel to work. Either way the 2 slots closest to the CPU do not work.

So does this mean I have a bad board with 2 bad DDR memory slots? FRICK!!!! if true.

Thank you.

hey wait, so can you run 1 stick in any slot? Or only some slots work?

What if you put one stick in the slot second closest to the CPU and then another in the one farthest away, will that work or no?

Try http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/BIOS/mb_bios_ga-z77x-up5-th_f4.exe

I think if you can't get even 2 sticks to run then something is wrong with the board, like physically.

So you are saying the two slots furthest from the CPu do not work at all? In that case then yes that is a defected board. Sorry frown.gif

Only some of the slots work. Its actually the 2 slots closest to the CPU that do not work. Which according to the Board manual on pg. 17 would be slot 4 and slot 2. The 2 slots farthest from the CPU toward the edge of the board are fine. I can put in 1 memory stick into either of the farthest slots slot 1 & 3 and the memory will work fine. I can populate both for a total of 16GB and it will be fine also. However the moment I put in a DIMM into either of the closer slots (slot 2 or 4) the error will come up.

In the bios it will show channel B as working when I have 2 sticks put into the farthest slots (1&3).

The error will also come up and the board will not boot if I just put a stick into either of the closest slots or if I populate both. A this point it does not matter if the other 2 slots are empty or full. It will not work. If I have the 2 working slots populated and I add 1 dimm into either of the closest slots it will fail. I just don't know 100% if its the board or the fact that I am putting more then 2 of that particular ram type. I need to get my hands on a different set of RAM to be sure. Still it looks to me like its the board.

I can only run any 1 of the 4 memory sticks(or a pair of them) in the 2 slots farthest form the CPU. Putting any 1 stick into either of the 2 closest slots to the CPU fails the board. I tried messing with the BIOS settings and that did not do anything. Flashing to F4 did not help either.

Having a failed board was exactly what I was trying to avoid. Oh well...I lost precious time but its a learning experience so this was fun say the least.

Thank you for the reply Sin smile.gif
