yet another "Another which SSD for my LAPTOP thread"

Thread Starter
hey guys! i've been reading Sean's guides and a lot of threads and but i still can't decide so i hope you guys can help. my laptop specs are as follows:

toshiba satellite p755
i7-2630QM
6 gb 1333 RAM
nvidia GT 540M
and Windows 8 Consumer Preview

i primarily use this laptop for typical computer work (internet, word, excel, photoshop) and gaming (league of legends, d3, bf3, cs:s, sc2, etc). this also is my only computer, and the rest of my family also only have laptops.

after having it for a year i decided to jump and switch to an ssd. but this being my first one i want to make sure it was the right one before i buy it. i've narrowed down my choices between a Crucial m4 vs OCZ Vertex 4, unless someone makes a real compelling argument to get neither. so far both prices are almost the same (128gb both $120 and 256 at $180 and $210 respectively @ amazon/newegg). i have few questions about these two and if people can give me their experiences and what they like about them, that would be great. i can only semi understand what the benchmarks mean, so please just treat me as a newbie if you want.

Crucial m4:
- how is the firmware updated? is it more or less of a hassle for myself with just a laptop to work with?
- how is it out of the box? can i just pop my win7pro/win8 disk and install?
- in comparison to the OCZ benchmarks show that it is slower. would i see the difference?
- if for the same price with the 128 is what i go with, would the m4 still be better?

OCZ Vertex 4:
- i know the firmware is updated via connecting to SATA using another drive with an OS. so with my laptop, only with a bootable drive is my only option in updating?
- have they been shipping out any 1.4firmware or higher ssds? or do all of them still require me to update before installing anything?
- how is it out of the box? is installing the OS on it pretty smooth as well? (if i chose not to update the firmware?)
- if i go with the 256 model, is $30 worth going with the Vertex4?

i hope someone can take the time to answer some of my questions. thank you if you do! i'll also keep reading threads as much as i can as well. thank you and have a good day.

Sandisk Extreme 120GB is also a nice SSD for the money. You should consider that one.

Crucial m4:

Via application from Crucial, ISO burned to a CD, or ISO put on a bootable USB. Firmware should be newest when received.
Quote:
- how is it out of the box? can i just pop my win7pro/win8 disk and install?
Should be ready to go. Yep. If update needed, it will take only a few min.
Quote:

Not much if any really, you will be hard pressed to notice a differeecne b/w high end SSDs. Maybe a little in photo shop when editing large files.
Quote:
- if for the same price with the 128 is what i go with, would the m4 still be better?
Can't really say myself, I just suggest getting the cheaper of higher end SSDs myself lol.

OCZ Vertex 4:
- i know the firmware is updated via connecting to SATA using another drive with an OS. so with my laptop, only with a bootable drive is my only option in updating?
There is also a bootable linux live environment you can use, so you don't need a OS. And I think you can update to 1.5 now without it being destructive, but you should ask in the Vertex 4 club to make sure.
Quote:
- have they been shipping out any 1.4firmware or higher ssds? or do all of them still require me to update before installing anything?
Newer should be 1.5, yet I heard 1.4 is still being shipped by places. You may need to do an update.
Quote:

Update the firmware, it only takes a few min! tongue.gif
Quote:
- if i go with the 256 model, is $30 worth going with the Vertex4?
As stated before I always suggest the cheapest for the size of higher end SSDs. I would say no. But the V4 hasn't shown anything really bad to me yet. Just average performance and a good price and warranty.

Also, you can look into the Plextor M3 and M5S, Samsung 830, and Intel drives.

heheh thank you sean! your threads have been most helpful! and thank you for taking your time with responding.

i have decided to go with a 256GB hard drive. (thank god i get a paycheck this week yay tongue.gif) i figure, having a laptop, carrying around a external all the time will be a drag (unless i am home of course).

i am leaning towards just going with the crucial m4 now as i can save money that way. i guess i just got blinded by all the crazy pictures of the benchmarks that people have been doing and the high numbers that everyone is comparing with. but in the end of the day, i guess it won't really affect me as much.

i'll keep this thread going for anyone just giving me their experiences about either drives and what they like about them.

thanks again!!

p.s. can you or someone explain to me what the issue is about V4's being slower when it starts to become full? does the m4 have this issue?

No problem, look around and see what kind of deals you can find.

Ehh, I heard about it, but never looked into it. I believe f/w version 1.5 fixed it. Someone in teh V4 club posted theirs at over 50% full and they had normal benchmarks. No slow down at all. All SSDs will be come slightly slower in write speeds when they are near full, how much depends on the SSD and capacity.
