Recommend me a DSLR kit

Thread Starter
I've got about $1k to spend.

Looking for a decent beginner ~ intermediate DSLR kit/bundle.

D5100/D90/T2i/T3i

No EVILs please. smile.gif

It'll be used for some low level shooting, but predominantly shot from a boat. (fish shots, beach, clouds...NATURE)

A telephoto lens, filter, bag, flash, extra battery (one of those bundles) would be preferred.

I haven't used an SLR since the film days, (owned an EVIL (NEX-5) and sold it not two months later)

Edit: after a couple weeks of research, I've finally decided on a Nikon D7000.

T2i and 55-250mm.

The T2i kit can be had for less than $600, refurbished or on sale. Target had a clearance for them for $500.

smile.gif Thanks!

I'll go and dig around. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with Amazon since it's on a gift card.

D90...not worth it?

I take it there isn't THAT big of a difference between it and the T2i

d90 is dated, so its not worth it.

the replacement to the d90 i believe is the d7000 which is an excellent camera.

Indeed it is. Thanks for the heads up.

Too bad the D7000 is just outside what I planned on spending.

nikon split the d90 class into the d5100 and d7000. you can pick up teh d5100 but you lose the autofocus motor and i believe the rear dial. the sensor is the same tho.

question. what made you get rid of the nex5?

I didn't care for the feel. it was so lens heavy that it felt wonky in my hands...and I can be a little clumsy...lol. Overall, it was a decent camera and unfortunately I leapt before Iooked.

How about the Pentax K-30? I know I won't have the lens availability, but I would be taking pictures on a boat, and the weather sealing seems like it would work nicely.

pentax makes very good cameras, unfortunately i dont have much experience with pentax. but that 16mp sensor should be similar to the one used in the nikon d7000/d5100 so image quality should not be bad.

one thing to keep in mind is that most stores do not carry pentax so finding lenses or flashes locally may be hard. Also renting gear will also be very difficult.

With Pentax the cameras they make right, are underrated. Drawbacks are what mz-n10 had listed. One of the reasons I can't justify owning a Pentax, yet. The upside is you can even use old PK mount, manuallenses.
