See thats the thing, I really want to go AM2 because I'm familiar with AMD and im not really comfortable learning how they work on another persons computer. I only experiment with my computer. And it hates me for it.

I also think it offers a much better upgrade path. AMD quad core FTW

About the same.

AM2 will be able to handle K8L and is forward compatible with AM3 (thus the AM3 CPU will fit in the AM2 motherboard, but not the other way around).

I don't know how long Intel will hang on to 775, but I have not heard plans for a new socket yet. For now, it seems that it will last for a bit.

And, if you buy right now, Intel is the way to go. AMD is way to much a performance hit.

UNLESS! you wait for the 4x4 platform and it indeed delivers as promised.

Big Boss: please leave fanboyism out of it. What is yuor argument for AMD?

It's your choice... right now Intel is the way to go, and second half next year the Intel Quad Core will come out (not Kentsfield, but it's successor).

How do you know it's future proof? I just stated AM2 won't be *that* long lived. Only K8L, and the AM3 CPUs will fit, but not use it to full advantage (since AM3 is designed for DDR3 RAM)

I understand you prefer AMD. But, we're talking about a rig for a third person here, and in that case the best performance should be picked, regardless of brand.

exactly, AM3 will come out in 08, so i think that is pretty future proof.
Future is what is most important at this point since quads arnt far away.
Conroe is the best now but the top AMD can handle anything. So by the time it cant quad cores will be out.

Err.. Kentsfield (QX6700) will be out next month. AMD 4x4 follows soon, and next year BOTH AMD and Intel will release their true QUAD cores.

Regardless upgradability, I expect both sockets to be the same.

Upgradability is not a reason to choose AMD, since I don't see a difference in the paths.

If you invest $5k right now, current performance is paramount in my opinion.

I have a suggestion. I'm going to sit him down and see what he wants from this computer and we'll go from there.
