Which Western Digital HDD for Storage

Thread Starter
So i'm kind in a hunt for a new storage drive and i'm looking to buy a new Western Digital storage drive as i always used them and they've been great.

But yea there is Green, Blue, Black version and i would like to ask if its worth to spend the extra cash on the blue or black version. I will use the drive only for storage.

I just want something that will last long enough and is reliable enough.

Thanks!!!

The blue are their average drives with the green being the efficient low energy version. If you are just using the drive for backup there is no reason to really spend for the increased performance that a black drive would yield. Both the blue and green drives should have the same warranty so go for a green if it is cheaper.

Yea because 2TB is actually "best for the buck" right now so i think i'll just go with the green one smile.gif

green for sure, blacks are way too loud, and blue make too much noise for my liking as well. greens are quiet, cool, use very little power and best of all, are the cheapest smile.gif

Iv got one WD HDD going strong for about 6 year. The only issue I'v ever had with a WD drive was one of them shorted and the circuit card caught fire a week after I got it. My PC had an ambient temp sensor which I had configured to power down at 120 degrees F, which alerted me to the smoke blowing out of my fan vent tongue.gif I pulled it out before any other damage was done, and they sent me a new drive immediatly, and I returned the bad one later. The replacement is still going strong.

If you are just using it for storage and not a boot drive then even the cheapest WD drive will be adequate. I would recommend the Green drive in this case because it's built for storage and runs cool. The Blue drive is their regular performance - average user drive. Black is high performance and higher price.

Well it will also have some games there too so will the green one be good enough? I will put my main games on SSD tho

It all depends on the files you want to store on the HDD. If it is just going to have a crap ton of songs, word files, pics, etc. then the green drive is just fine and it has a 3 year warranty so you can assume that it would last at least that long.

If you are going to be storing some programs on it because you want to keep as much space on your SSD available for games, then get the blue drive.

If you have a massive steam library that you simply can't fit on a SSD, then get either the black edition drive or any seagate drive that is being advertised as a part of seagate's "power of one" campaign.

I personally switched to seagate from being a WD user. Because their newer drives are actually faster than the WD black drives while being cheap because they increased the platter size to 1TB which means fewer platters and fewer parts to pay for wink.gif
