help me understand barbs+fittings+tubing

Thread Starter
So i'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on WC my components, I just had a couple questions that i can't seem to understand after reading through some posts:

[1] Do barbs have to be purchased serparately, or do most components come with them? For example, does the 655 pump come with barbs? If i need to buy my own, what size? (all of the components I have selected come with g 1/4 ins and outs.
[2] If the barb is G1/4, would 1/2" x 3/4" Monsoon Fittings fit?
[3] if using 1/2" x 3/4" Monsoon fittings, would I use 1/2"ID tubing?

On a side note, i'm liking the look of bent piping in lieu of tubing. What size pipes would i need to fit on g1/4 barbs?

Thanks!

1) Normally, parts require barbs separately, but it varies with the part.

2) G1/4 is a threading specification not a bore specification.

3) Yes. Sometimes people go with 7/16" ID hose on 1/2" barbs for a tighter fit.

1. No, most componants do not come with them unless said otherwise on the packaging/description.
2. The hole size that the fittings screw into are G1/4. You either choose barbs or compression. In your case, Monsoon's are compression fittings ( you don't need both ).
3. you use the same size tubing as fitting. So if your fittings are 1/2 ID 3/4 OD then your tubing will be the same.

1. Some items come with them. Pumps usually have them built in.
2. G1/4 is the thread size, currently the standard for blocks. A lot of reservoir fill ports are G3/8
3. Correct. With any compression fitting, you will need to use the same dimension tubing, in your example, 1/2" ID x 3/4" OD.

For bent pipe, you will want the same OD as the fittings you get.

like this:

you'll need metal compression fittings for a g 1/4 fitting like these Koolance Nozzle
Single for Copper Pipe For OD 13mm 1/2in - NZL-CU13
or equivilant in Bitspower.

If you buy the Swiftech Special Edition MCP655 pump it has the plastic barbed fittings machined off and threaded for G 1/4 fittings, also I think this one does come with barbs, check to make sure though.
But if you are planning on putting a different top on your MCP655/MCP655-B then just buy the cheapest you can find as you will not need the pump housing. I can recommend the Bitspower V2 pump top as it has several inlet/outlet locations for versatility in plumbing your tubing.
