AMD preps launch of three FX processors for 4x4 platform, 65nm roadmap - Page 2

The FX-60 already took 125W if I remember correctly. But 3.2 on 90nm? Dual core? I bet no one saw that coming. AMD obviously does soemthing right to get that kind of speed on 90nm.

I was expecting it. After a while, a process becomes so well refined that you can manage to get better yeilds of increasingly higher speeds. Of course, the law of diminishing returns kicks in eventually and you have to do a process shrink in order to attain higher clockspeeds.

I wonder how they will overclock. o=

Diffrent speeds for diffrent cores would be nice. o=

That is quite impressive that AMD can squeeze such speeds on 90nm but I hope that they're not putting all of their R&D on that. They should be putting those resources on how to improve and refine their 65nm process. I'm not too impressed with the TDP of the 65nm parts. Seems like they haven't gotten to the point where the TDP of the 65nm parts are significantly better than 90nm. I'm sure it'll come with time but time is something they're running short on.

Also anyone else getting confused with all of the core names? What's the difference between Barcelona, Altair, Antares, and Agena?????

Well they are close to the release of 65nm cpu's, and they have already started manufactoring them, so I think a significant breakthough for AMD will have to wait until K8L. But CnQ would really help, its a very nice power management system.

Hey is it just me or is this going to be a hella expensive upgrade? New mobo, new cpus, 2 new PSUs or add another, 4GB DDR2, cooling for this new socket. At least I don't have to upgrade my video card.....Oh wait Vista is coming out! Of course I do. I have a feeling this is going to cost somewhere in the several thousands.
