How to tell if my HDD is dying?

Thread Starter
hey

1) how could i tell if my HDD is dying?
i experience a lot of freezes, random lockups and restarts

earlier i was using both seagate and WD
then seagate only
now WD green, but currently its working fine

2) which tests am i supposed to run?

i ran SMART, and it shows warning in "reallocated sector count" in seagate

what could be the consequences?

Run HDtune and post the "health" page here or crystal disk info and post the smart info (just take a screen shot)

Also run a surface scan and tell us how many bad sectors.

hard drive is making strange noises
slowing down or losing a few files
clicking sound
no operating system can be found when you start your computer
Windows crashes
lock-up during booting

you could try a free program called HD Tune not the pro version though
Check For Bad Sectors using HD tune or any other program you may have

but sounds like you got a bad drive MAYBE

the consequences are a dead and unrecoverable drive so make your backups and use the drive you think is failing for not important stuff

This. I would personally make an image with the windows backup feature so you have your stuff safe and sound. Trust me, data recovery from a drive is.... a pain and sometimes very costly (I work as a tech so I see it EVERY day).

speaking of a system image i need to make one ASAP. last time my drive hit the dust i died with it XD
but i managed to survive after the computer shop recovered my files for $300 i told them it wasn't important stuff (it was my life %100 important XD i had work files and deadline on there, enough stuff to really give me a heart attack and die XD but if i told them that they would really charge me a eye and leg biggrin.gif

now i have 5 external hard drives that backup my files every week biggrin.gif

Lol.

Or you could be like the cool kids and run RAID 5.

OP, let us know if your drive is making any funny noises as well and post them screen shots!

Replace the drive. Bad sectors = failing drive

That bad sector could be someplace important (like right in the middle of the os)

I had a 120GB drive which I had all my downloads on and stuff including my Minecraft server, it made clicking noises and began to crash my computer, as far as I know it's dead.

CrystalDiskInfo 5.0 is another good free app for checking hard drive problems. Just use this for the backup and it is free. Thanks
