[SOLVED] - did some research and found many other hubs' power adapters only supply 3A. Close / delete / do your magic, mods.
Hi all,
I have a question about a power adapter for a powered USB hub.
The hub has 7 ports that can draw up to 500ma each. I lost the original power supply that came with it, and I'm wondering if I can use a 3.0amp one to replace it.
I'm thinking since each port has a .5amp max and there's 7 ports + cable from the computer (assuming the computer can provide at least .5amps itself), then I should be fine with a 3.0amp power supply.
Is this OK? The hub came with a 3.5amp adapter, and I don't understand why it would need a 500ma overhead if there are technically only 6 ports drawing "extra" power - 1 out of the 7 can obviously be powered straight from the PC. I really would like to use it again since I found this 3.0amp adapter but I need a confirmation that it's safe and will (in theory) be able to power all 7 ports under full load.
