Setting up your graphic options

1000

I'm just going to point out the most important of these and why they are how they are. Other options can be tweaked to your preference.

Dual Video Cards: Sounds crazy, but try enabling dual video cards in the COD4 in-game options. For one reason or another, this often smooths out choppy gameplay. Note: do this even if you only have a single card.

Brightness: Higher brightness will help you locate enemy's quicker when they're in darker areas

Sync Every Frame (AKA v-sync): You want this off because it limits your frame rate and will interfere with any FPS cap you set

Shadows: Off. It gets rid of most shadows, like my reasoning with the higher brightness it just helps locate enemy players faster if you can see them more clearly in darker areas. Turning it off will also help you gain a few more FPS. Although some might say that seeing the enemy's shadow could give you extra time to react, so it really depends on the person and whether this is something you might find useful

Depth of field: Having this enabled blurs your peripheral vision when you sight in on your gun. Turn this off otherwise it leaves you less aware of your surroundings when you sight in

General tips to improve your play-style

Reload canceling:

Quote:

Cancelling a reload by momentarily sprinting, quickly switching weapons or meleeing before the animation is completed (but the gun is reloaded) to resume firing quicker.

Doing this is important, once you're used to it you'll naturally do it. Not only does it help you resume fire quicker but it removes the sound of the character putting the magazine back in the gun since the animation is canceled before that happens. This can help you in SnD as an example since many people have headsets/headphones and will pick up those sounds easily, so being quieter will give you an edge on the competition.

Reloading tip:

Try not to use every bullet in your clip. if you have 0 rounds in your magazine when you reload the animation takes a second longer because the gun has to be cocked. It might not seem like much but when you're getting shot that second will matter

Airstrikes:

Receiving end; If there's no buildings nearby just try your luck at laying down next to a wall and lean into it. if an Airstrike is on top of you, but your screen isn't shaking, don't move a muscle; you'll survive it 70% of the time, or die in the 3rd pass. (I think this is a minor bug, but doesn't always happen. If you're in vastly open ground, you're going to die. but if you're in semi cover/minor cover, it works a treat)

Sender: As for placing them, I don't find UAV a necessity. The way the spawns work in CoD4 is pretty simple; they're spawning where your team is not, so just place it where your team isn't in large concentration. The main spawn point is on the opposite point of which where your teams is, so by pulling up the bigger map (by pressing ESC) you can easily work out where their spawn is and drop it on there

Credits to Swift Castiel for most of the information on airstrikes cheers.gif

Strafing:

Quote:

Strafe jumping allows you to jump further by executing a slight mouse movement while in the air. The idea is to commence your jump by pressing and holding the W and A keys to steer your avatar (left and forward). Then, the sprint button. Finally, when you are in the air, you rotate the mouse into the jump

While this may sound difficult once you've learned how to do this it will vastly improve your play. It can be used to navigate the map quicker, corner hop, ect..

Prefiring:

Quote:

Rather than jumping around that corner and firing in mid-air in the hopes of surprising them, why not a controlled burst of fire? Visualize where he might be and start firing before you walk through the door. If the wall is thin, you might already have tagged him by the time you finally see him.

This one is important, it will help you gain many more kills then you might have previously by not doing this technique

Config_mp editing

You might ask why would you edit your config? What benefit does it have? Well there's a lot of reasons why and benefits why you would get from doing such a thing. As an example, you can increase the FPS cap sincdefault is only 85. You can widen the FOV, since the default is quite low as well as many other beneficial tweaks.

For this task I recommend getting notepad++ if you don't have it already, it will make this so much easier. After getting notepad++ head over to one of these directory's depending on which copy you have,

Click here for the file paths (Click to show)

Steam:

C:\Program files (x86) > Steam > Steamapps > Common > Call of Duty 4 > players > profiles > Yourprofile

Retail:

Windows Vista/Win7 x86:
With UAC Disabled:

C:\Program Files\Activision\players\profiles\(your profile name)
  or %programfiles%\Activision\players\profiles

With UAC Enabled:

C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles
  or %localappdata%\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles

Windows Vista/Win7 x64:
With UAC Disabled:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\players\profiles\(your profile name)
or %programfiles(x86)%\Activision\players\profiles

With UAC Enabled:

C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles
or %localappdata%\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles

Once you've located the config open it with notepad++ then press ctrl + F to start searching for the various things such as; com_maxfps

Important tweaks I recommend

com_maxfps "85" > "125" or "250" are popular. I use 250, but if these are too high for your system there are other sweet spots as well such as 71, 83, 90 ect.. With 333 FPS you can jump furthest and highest out of all FPS. 500 FPS is bugged, you can run silently, only downside is jumping height and distance is lower then the other sweet spots.
cg_fov "65" > "80" with 80 being the maximum and the recommended
r_drawdecals "1" > "0"  cleans up some of the random paper and trash on the ground
maxpackets "30" > "100" helps people who have good fps but bad hit registration
snaps "20" > "30" should make movement look smother and hits register better
cg_brass "1" > "0" Turns off visible shell ejection
cl_packetdup "1" > This is the amount of packets you send to the server each time, if you have a higher ping it may be beneficial to increase this. 30 ping set to 0, 45-55 ping = 1, 65-75 ping = 2 ect..
rate > Players preferred baud rate – 1000 to 25000
This command controls the rate of packets that the server will send data to you, to ensure a good solid connection. For 128k connections or people with capped net, it can be set around to 8000. If you are on LAN or have good ADSL connection, set this to 25000

/r_gpusync "adaptive" > "aggressive" – GPU synchronisation (used to improve mouse responsiveness) – Recommended Value: 2 (Ie: Agressive)
This command increases the GPU sync time with your peripherals on your computer, such as your mouse. Setting the value to 2 – aggressive – will get the best response out of your mouse. This command must be typed into the console, by default it is not in there but after you've changed this it saves to the CFG.

Optional but helpful

seta cg_drawFPS "0" > "Simple"

seta cg_drawLagometer "0" > "1"

At any time you feel you've messed up, here's a copy of the stock config. This goes into your players folder, inside whichever account's CFG you modified

Tactics / strategy's

Coming soon

Class set-up

My personal favourite gun is the AK-47, followed by the AK-74u. Other guns such as MP5, M4 carbine are good too but they have their disadvantages versus the AK and AKU such as no reload canceling.

AK-47

1000

AK-74u

1000

My perk recommendations: For the first slot I always keep Bandolier, without it you tend to run out of bullets quickly. The second slot is generally always Stopping Power, depending on whether the server you'll be playing on is hardcore or not it can also be swapped for Sleight of hand. The third slot has many useful perks, if you're playing TDM or DOM and plan on rushing extreme conditioning is for you. It could also be swapped for steady aim if you plan on using an SMG such as AK-74u or MP5 since both are great for hip-fire. In SND you'd generally want dead silence, but it would depend on what sort of play style you're doing.

 Skins

On both Steam and retail versions of the game skins are easy to use and can open up a wide range of modification that can help personalize the game. It is client side, so no one besides yourself can see it. You can change the skin of pretty much any model in the game, pretty neat and you do this by following these steps;

Steam version:

Navigate to where your Steam is installed then go to this directory: Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty 4\main. Once you're here you must rename some folders, feel free to make back ups.

iw_00 > localized_english_aa

iw_01 > localized_english_aab
iw_02 > localized_english_aac
iw_03 > localized_english_aad
iw_04 > localized_english_aae
iw_05 > localized_english_aaf
iw_06 > localized_english_aag

After the files have been renamed accordingly then you can go ahead and download the spoof folders. Open this zip with Winrar or 7zip and simply copy/paste the contents into the main folder.

COD4_SPOOF_FOLDERS.zip 1k .zip file

The folder we will be using from now on is the images folder in localized_english_aw_07, it is where we put all the .iwi files which are the skins.

You can get skins here > http://cfgfactory.com/skins/ and once you've chosen some you want to install all you do is drop them into the localized_english_aw_07 folder. To note, do not have a camo on the gun you're trying to put a skin on as there can be confliction such as overlapping. Do not try to have two different skins for the same model, otherwise it will not work.

Once you have the desired skin downloaded, open the .rar file with 7zip or winrar. Inside that .rar should be file with a .iwd extension, open that and there should be .iwi files which are what you put into your images folder in localized_english_aw_07

Retail version:

The process is similar except there's a few small differences with the folder renaming. I've got a short-cut to get this done quicker since there's a bit more work involved then the Steam version method, it's a simple batch file you place in the main folder and execute that will do the renaming for you.

Folder renaming .bat 0k .zip file

After you've done this you make a Winrar Zip archive called localized_english_aw_07 with the file extension .iwd. Once that's completed make a folder inside this one called images, this is where you place the .iwi files which are the skins. Both versions take the same skins, so head on over the site I mentioned above to get skins at.

Once you have the desired skin downloaded, open the .rar file with 7zip or winrar. Inside that .rar should be file with a .iwd extension, open that and there should be .iwi files which are what you put into your images folder in localized_english_aw_07

Finished product:

1000

As you can see it's much cleaner and it has a touch of personalization to it.

Demos

What are they?

Quote:

What are cod4 demos? A demo is basically a Call of Duty 4 video. Instead of being recorded by frame captures, it records key strokes, and plays them back in cod4 so you can watch old matches.

Demos take up very little space, so recording all the time is a viable option. This can be useful to see what you did wrong, or what someone else did right (and vice versa of course). This feature can also be used for catching cheaters in the act, most admins require this if they didn't see what was happening.

How do I record demos?

By pressing the tide key (~) if you have the console enabled, you can type /record and /stoprecord to start and stop recording. Alternatively you can make binds so instead of typing that everytime you can simply press the keys you chose. Personally I use the + and - keys. This is done by either enter this code into your CFG or console:

Quote:

bind - "stoprecord"
bind = "record"

The - and = can be substituted for any set of keys you might prefer.

How do I watch a demo?

After you've recorded a demo it is stored in this path \Call of Duty 4\main\demos, next make a folder in the 'players' folder called 'demos' then move the demo in there. Next open the game and open the console, type "/demo demoname" the demo name is the whole file name so it might look like this "/demo demo0000". After this it should start playing, and if you want it to stop simply type "/disconnect".

Extra commands:

To use these commands to do things such as fast forward, pause, slo-mo ect.. You need to be in developer mode. To do this open the console (~) type /devmap mp_crash (Or any other map, doesn't need to be crash) then once that's loaded open the console again and type /disconnect, now you can open your demo and use commands such as the ones I've listed below.

Here's just a few basic commands to make watching demos a bit easier, so copy paste this into your CFG. Basically what this does is make your arrow keys allow you to fast forward, slow-mo, and return to the regular play speed.

Quote:

bind UPARROW "timescale 100"
bind DOWNARROW "timescale 1"
bind LEFTARROW "timescale .5"
bind RIGHTARROW "timescale 10"

If you're looking to improve, consider watching raw footage of skilled players. Here are a bunch of links to demos you can watch and learn from:

Here's links to various skilled players demos (Click to show)

Binds

Binds are like macro keys, where you've assigned something to happen when you press a key. I'm going to show you an example of a simple chat bind, it helps communicate quickly whether it be serious or not. You can do this in both the config or in the console, I will show you both ways.

The first method is done in the console, you can open this by pressing ~. If it doesn't work, then you need to enable it in the multiplayer options.

/bind K say ^1Hello everyone! Will come out as Hello everyone! in the server chat when you press K.

Color codes:

^0 = black
^1 = red
^2 = green
^3 = yellow
^4 = blue
^5 = light blue
^6 = purple
^7 = white
^8 = Only When Playing as American = Dark Green
^8 = Only When Playing as Russian = Light Red
^8 = Only When Playing as British = Dark Blue
^8 = Only When Playing as German = Gray
^9 = grey

Here is an example of how you would do it directly in the config,

bind O "say Good Game"

Pretty simple, all you write is Bind, the key you want it mapped to, then "say whatever you want goes here". Colours also work the same as in the console, so if you wanted to add a colour you just need to add ^ and the respective colour code to the colour to want before the letter/word/sentence you want coloured.

Common Issues and fixes for them

Missing d3dx9_43.dll or similar .ddl file:

Update or install DirectX.

Game won't start on Windows 7:

If the audio driver crashes or the game looses response on start up then simply plug anything in the microphone input OR Start > Control panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Then recording tab > Right click and go show disabled devices, something called Stereo mix should show up and be disabled by default. Just go ahead and enable that, and everything should work.

If the above doesn't work, in some cases your CFG is causing a problem so by replacing it with another it fixes the problem of the game crashing on start up.

No CD Key:

If you've played the game from the same windows installation previously do this:

1. Start > search programs and files > regedit
2. Open that then go to edit then click find..
3. Search for 'codkey' no caps no spaces without the apostrophes
4. What comes up is your key code, open up cod4 and go options > multiplayer options > enter key code and put the code that the codkey says in there, then verify

This is on Windows 7 64 bit, so if you're on vista or XP I'm not sure if the process is the same or not

The goal of most of these settings isn't really a performance increase (If you're referring to frame rate that is..?), most are geared towards hit reg depending on which you're looking at. As for the frame skipping I'm guessing you're referring to screen tearing when you increased the frame rate cap? If that's the case then not much you can do besides switch to a digital output such as display port or HDMI. I had the same problem on VGA but switching to disport fixed that

Oh CoD4, my game. I've got over 2000 hours clocked on this game, but unfortunately it's not played much down under anymore. I ran paradox's config from eSuba when I did play though. Definitely one of the best FPS/most balanced FPSs I've ever played. I might play if there's a server that's got low enough ping stateside though tongue.gif

Feel free to add me to a member list (If there is one). Also am willing to help out with anything CoD4 related biggrin.gif
