Building a NAS need advice

Thread Starter
I am planning on building a NAS with 3 x 2TB HDDs and use FreeNAS. I have most things picked out and cant make a decision on processor and case. So far I have:

Case: Silverstone PS07B vs Silverstone TJ08B-E
PSU: 400W modular PC Power Cooling
Memory: 8gb Gskill
CPU+MB:

AMD A6-3500 Llano 2.1GHz (2.4GHz Max Turbo) Socket FM1 65W Triple-Core Desktop APU (CPU + GPU) with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6530D AD3500OJGXBOX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.892395

vs

ASUS AMD Zacate E350/Hudson M1/SATA3&USB3.0/A&V&GbE/Micro ATX Motherboard s E35M1-M PRO
http://www.amazon.com/Zacate-Hudson-Motherboard-E35M1-M-PRO/dp/B004LDEQHA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1YEJ8WNOJWHBU&colid=YU4R88QBNZG0

I know the Llano is much more powerfull but I am trying to decide between power usage/heat vs performance. This will just be my home NAS box possibly running a couple plug ins like BT. Any advice on the case and CPU would be great.

Honestly neither of those? You're better off going with a cheap Celeron sandy bridge, it will use less power while being more than powerful enough - just grab a board that can change voltage and under-volt it even further.

For case, just look for something small and cheap, doesn't need to be showy since it will be tucked away in a corner. I originally purchased my Lian Li PC-Q25 case for my NAS but decided it would make an amazing tiny beast build, but it does make a perfect NAS case.

Is there much of a difference between the G540 (65W) and G540T (35W) celeron as far as idle. This system will be running at idle a lot so the difference between zacate and the celeron worries me as far power consumption. I found this MB for the celeron that looks like it would work pretty well, I plan to move to 5 HDDs eventually so the 5 SATA ports is nice.

If you want a lot of HDD bays, look into the NZXT Source if you want a mid-tower. I agree a sandy celeron seems like the best idea. thumb.gif

I built a server with the A6 3500 and like it a lot so far. I still need to do some tweaking and very light OC and all that. But it works out for me specially now that I upgraded the old dying OS drive it had for a small SSD.

The reason I went with this APU is because since I plan to have the server on most of the time I didn't want to just have a system there on w/o getting much use other than storing data and streaming. So I will eventually use it as an HTPC and Gaming computer. Blu ray movies play nicely and I've played Anmensia and Diablo 3 with it and it works great.

The only downside so far is that since I installed Server 2008 R2 I haven't gotten around making USB 3.0 drivers to work.

You can thank me later biggrin.gif
Run my NAS enclosure on just the AMD e-350 APU. low power, cheap and almost never sees past 30% load.

That only has 4 SATA ports, I need at least 5 like the ASUS. Do you run Bittorrent on your NAS (FreeNAS?)

Freenas 7.x has a plugin for torrents. I was running Freenas 8, currently moving over to using OpenIndiana.

FreeNAS 8.2 released this week also has plug in support (first release wiht it). I was curious if zacate can keep up with BT. I think i am going with the Celeron G540 just in case I decide to do anything else with it in the future.

There's also NAS4Free (continuation of the FreeNAS 7 line). It has newer ZFS support (FreeBSD 9 based). That's what I've been using. If you want to do anything like deduplication or high compression, that really eats CPU and memory.
