How do I ship a case with part in it? What precautions to take?

Thread Starter
I want to ship a PC; that is a case with mobo and everything else in it. I never did that before, at least not with modern day hardware, and I'm not certain if it can be shipped safely. Basically, I'm moving to another country and I want to take the PC with me; I still got the box for the case so I plan to use that but remove the gpu and put it in its own box. Unfortunatly, the MSI box it came with was as decrepit as it gets the moment I first opened it, suffice to say I don't think it was ever meant to be reusable. I also lost the anti-static wrap thing. The hard drives I don't know. Am I supposed to fedex it?

As long as the hard drives are secure I cant see a problem. CPU heatsinks can be a problem if they are bulky like a d14.

How much is in the case? Your Sig Rig? Different cases can be easier or harder. Might think of filling the voids in your case with airbags to help protect cards / cables. Do you have the original packaging for your case? That's the best option then also.

Great that you have the box for the case, the HDD will be safe to leave in as andrewmchugh said, once intact. Jus bubble wrap the sheit out of it & you'll be g2g thumb.gif

If you're shipping the case and are wanting to keep your components within it, you can/should do the following:
Remove the cards, and heatsink from your CPU
If you have a WC setup, you HAVE to drain it. I would take apart anything not bolted to the case.
Get some bubble wrap and wrap your GPU, CPU cooler, and whatever else isn't bolted.
Get some packing peanuts and begin filling the INSIDE of the case with packing peanuts.
See if there is room for you to put your bubble-wrapped components within the case. Surround with packing peanuts.
Once the case is full of packing peanuts, put your side panel back on and put packing tape to ensure it will not open on the outside to keep the door intact.
On the front of the case where your drive bays are, put a 1/4" sheet of styrofoam and tape that to the front to prevent damage.
Put it back in the/a box and fill with peanuts or the styrofoam if you still have it.
Your HDD, PSU, CPU, and bolted in components SHOULD be okay.
It will be heavy, but at least you have everything in one box.

When you unpack it, remove EVERYTHING and hit it with some compressed air to make sure the packing peanut fragments are not in the nooks and crannies of your case (fan blades, fins, etc.)

DO SHIP FEDEX. They are top in class of shipping and handling. And I would ensure you get signature delivery required whereever you are shipping it to.

Good luck.

^^ Do this

OR you could take a "carry on" the plane and just ship the case with nothing in it ph34r-smiley.gif

If the PC has a very large videocard, you might want to consider removing and shipping it separate. Typically the videocard is only secured at the backpanel, if it's a long and heavy card the other end might be able to move during shipping. The card or PCI-E slot might get damaged.

Also if the case features tool-less drive mounting, then those drives are more likely to come loose during shipping. An unmounted HDD flopping around the inside of the case can do alot of damage to itself and other components. Usually if I'm shipping a case which features tool-less mounting, ill use a few cable ties to secure the mounts for shipping.

Disassemble it entirely, and pack it tightly inside the case.

Any other way and it should be on a pallet and have hardware with no extra weight to it.

Also, don't mark it fragile. I have received some sketchy packages with fragile tape on them.

Don't use packing peanuts in the case. I believe most of them will create a static charge and could possibly kill hardware. Secure you heat sink with zip-ties or remove it completely. Hard drives should be fine in the cage. Just make sure the screws or whatever are snug. I'd wrap the gpu up and stick inside the case after you have put if some bubble wrap. Then fill the case with bubble wrap. I wouldn't use air bags because if they pop thats a lot of space that was just created for things to move. Make sure it's pretty well and snug but not cram packed. You don't want to create extra stress on the hardware but you also dont want it to move. When you put the case in the box I'd pack around it also. Use quality tape on the box and have them lable every side of the box "Fragile"

Make sure you have a list and picture of everything inside of the case. Take pictures as you are packing the case. If possible get copies of the reciepts for your hardware and make sure you get insurance that covers everything. It may sound overboard and unnecessary but in the event something should happen you will everything you need to help make your case. It never hurts to be over prepared.

Thanks for the help, I'll take these suggestions into consideration but I don't understand bubble wrapping GPU in the case, how could I secure it inside a case when there is hardly any space for it there unless you mean I shouldnt pull it out of pci-e? Wouldn't it be easier to just place the GPU back into its own box which i still have but have no faith in? The CPU cooler is the one in the sig, ah nevermind I now realise its not listed there, but its one of those basic commercial water cooling things, you know like the one intel started building. What worries me is not the cpu, but the cpu cooler radiator which is the small kind that occupies one fan.
