Mindchill vs Krow: All-In-One Liquid Chiller Build Off! - Page 10

Hi Krow! Great build, man!

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, you were seeing max temps of around 50c on an H70 and 48c on a dual-TEC direct die setup? Thats a mighty expensive 2c, Haha.

It seems like you were able to get much better temps with the heatsink/chiller setup than with the direct-die/water-cooled setup. But, you're also using a 4-TEC design for the chiller, right? What's the power usage on a setup like that?

I started a thread a while back about creating a lower-power, modest performance TEC rig and the simplicity of your design is appealing. I'm wondering if I could achieve my goal of bringing my 3770's max load temps from the mid 90s down to the 70s by using a similar design with only a single TEC - maybe 2 low power TECS?

Sorry for not straight up answering this question. It kept getting lost in the larger responses. It's a 4 TEC design. Each heatsink is cooling an individual TEC which is chilling the coolant.

I like this design as if I want to I could build 2 more modules (4 heatsinks) and add graphics cards to the loop.

I hooked the meanwell up to a power monitor and it said 390W. That wasn't what it was suppose to be (360W was what I expected) so I checked the voltages and each TEC was getting 12.8V. It was suppose to be 12V cause I didn't adjust it since My original testing. I would like to run this from my ATX power supply but I don't think 850W would be enough for full tilt coolers and the overclocks. Thinking I'll have to upgrade my PSU to 1K watts or higher.

I guess your water temperature during prime95 is around 23-25C. I dig out my old results for comparison. IIRC I used the same CPU and motherboard. The water was at 19C during prime95 in the test. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-hrvjoVqG0cI/TmP4sJPR0yI/AAAAAAAAA_Y/2nufDwblwLQ/s1600/TEC1.JPG

Nice project and test thumb.gif I always want to do this as you did but never got enough time.

Results are pretty much the same lol, Mine may have been a few degrees less. Looks like you forgot to adjust the offset to get more true temp readings biggrin.gif Although now that I look at the results, you're putting ALOT of voltage through that CPU. Beyond 1.44V is the unsafe area for it. Might get better temps if you didn't have it so high. Nice results and programming none the less!

Looking good! Whats the wattage of that chip @ 4.2ghz/1.44v?

That wasn't his dual TEC setup. This chiller though is hitting 36c full load with the fans @ 50%, 29c @ full DC. smile.gif

I'd love to run one in line with my TEC block, but I currently had to put my Dew point monitoring back on so I'm ambient/humidity limited once again(and dropped my OC down to 4.6 because of that). Even though I did an overkill insulation jo on the board and cold plate, the top of the plate got colder then I expected and it started getting condensation running 24/7 and I got two drips of water on my 7970 that almost killed it. Took me three restarts to realize that the artifacts and freezing wasn't due to my mild OC, but the card was getting wet!

I was able to clean it up and get the green corrosion spots off and luckily it still works perfectly smile.gif.

That was my Dual TEC Direct Die Block that Ultrasonic2 made. Was definitely pricey when I bought it from him lol, but the nickle plating was totally worth it biggrin.gif

At 4.2GHz with 1.44V it should be almost 200W. Overclock calculator is saying 195W. My stock voltages is 1.32V, unlike the 1.4V the calculator lists for default..

First to need to figure out how much Wattage you want your TEC to move. The TECs (Plural) Qmax should cover your entire load. When you figured out what your total load is, you want to figure out what temperature drop you want. Then you begin to build around that, testing many different TECs to see if you get the performance numbers (Qmax vs Pmax) you want. You should score for a 1:1 Ratio. You can make the ratio better by using more TECs at lower voltages, but when you do that you will reduce how much temperature you can drop from the load.

I think Mindchill has packed up shop. He seemed to have gotten tired of making them and wanted to move more into computer cases but I don't think he's doing those right now either. Not to worry though, once I'm out of school and have a job, I plan to be selling my own blocks and cooling. Mindchills controllers were definitely something else!

Damn, that sucks, I was thinking about getting the Quad or running a chiller in line with my single...

Looks like I got one of the last of his kits then!

That`s a drag, Mindchill made some great products. I have already ordered two XBox 360 waterblocks and another pair of Tec`s so I can add another chiller in series with the one I got from Arktic. Controllers I have ordered do not have dew point adjustment but I will be insulating board, block ,piping and pump top with Armaflex insulation so it won`t matter. Will post some details later in my 3770K build soon as parts come in next week or so. thumb.gif
